New Poll Reveals Parents Are Very Concerned About What Schools Are Teaching Kids

According to a new Fox News poll, more and more parents are concerned about what is being taught in the classroom.

At least two major factors – critical race theory and COVID rules – have driven an increase in parental activism when it comes to what goes on in the schools on a day-to-day basis.

Parents aren’t liking what they’re finding.

According to the survey, 73 percent of voters are “extremely” or “very” concerned about what is being taught to their kids in public schools.

School Curriculum Ranks Near The Top Of Concerns For Many Americans

The issue has become so prevalent that it is near the top of all important issues for many Americans.

Only a few issues are more important: 87 percent of respondents being more worried about inflation and 76 percent worried about both health care and national disunity each.

School curriculum concerns not surprisingly differ based on political identity.

The groups most focused on what is being taught in the classroom are Republicans, at a high 81 percent. Parents generally followed, at 80 percent.

Inflation ranks higher for Republicans, at 89 percent, followed by the border crisis at 82 percent.

Parents put inflation as their top concern at 88 percent and then health care at 81 percent.

Democrats concern about what schools are teaching is ranked eighth out of twelve other issues of focus. Readers can probably guess why.

Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who administered the survey, told Fox News that “The debate about the nature of the curriculum in the public schools has become a hot button issue for Republicans.”

“There is strong sentiment on the right that administrators are imposing a liberal agenda against the wishes of parents,” Shaw added.

Fox News reported, “When asked about certain actions in schools, more voters say it’s a ‘major problem’ that school administrators are pushing political agendas (63%) and there are threats against school officials (57%) than point to parents aggressively pushing political agendas at school boards (54%) and not getting enough say in their kids’ studies (47%).”

Political Agendas In School

“About half say too much focus on race (49%) is a major problem with schools, while somewhat fewer say the same about overly accommodating transgender policies (44%),” Fox News observed.

Democrat Chris Anderson joined Shaw in conducting the poll and told Fox News, saying “As national politics boil over into school board meetings, Democrats and Republicans agree that school boards and parents pushing political agendas are a major problem.”

Anderson added, “But that’s where the agreement ends, with Republicans twice as likely as Democrats to think there is too much focus on race in schools and that parents don’t have enough say.”

The Fox News poll was conducted October 16-19, 2021 with 1,003 registered voters nationwide.
