Former first lady Melania Trump’s office did not like NBC historian Michael Beschloss’s criticism of the work she did on the White House Rose Garden, and slammed him as “dishonorable.”
Beschloss tweeted on Saturday, “Evisceration of White House Rose Garden was completed a year ago this month, and here was the grim result—decades of American history made to disappear.”

Melania Trump – through her Twitter account – responded in a way that would certainly make her husband proud: “@BeschlossDC has proven his ignorance by showing a picture of the Rose Garden in its infancy.”
“The Rose Garden is graced with a healthy & colorful blossoming of roses,” Mr’s Trump’s Office tweet continued. “His misleading information is dishonorable & he should never be trusted as a professional historian.”
Beschloss’s original post included a photo of the White House Rose Garden filled with rows and rows of beautiful, blooming rose bushes. The Office of Melania Trump’s retweet of Bschloss included the historian describing what he called the “evisceration of White House Rose Garden” by Melania.
In his post, there is a photo without any blooming rose bushes.
Mrs. Trump has always been proud of her work in the Rose Garden during her time as first lady, particularly her renewal and restoration efforts.
In July 2020, she tweeted, “Even in the most difficult times, the @WhiteHouse Rose Garden has stood as a symbol of strength & continuity.”
“Today, it is my pleasure to announce our plans to renew & restore this iconic space so that we preserve its history & beauty for generations to come,” she added.
In August 2020, she celebrated the completion of the project.
“Excited to honor history & celebrate the future in our beautiful @WhiteHouse Rose Garden this evening. Thank you to all who helped renew this iconic & truly gorgeous space.”
CBS News reported at the time, “Mrs. Trump said she wants to return the garden to its original 1962 glory, when it was designed by Rachel Lambert Mellon, a friend of President John F. Kennedy.”
Like her husband Donald, Melania has been known to fire back at the media.
Last year, the former First Lady took a torch to the media, saying, “After my husband became president, it was so disheartening to see the once-proud integrity of American journalism become a political propaganda tool of swamp politicians. For the last four years, the media has relentlessly attacked my husband, choosing gossip and anonymous sources over substance and the sole success of our nation.”
