During the President’s first foreign trip as Commander-in-Chief, First Lady Melania Trump penned a letter to Pope Francis, asking to visit with sick children in an Italian hospital after their meeting with the pontiff.
During an emotional visit, Trump spoke to the children in their native language, took selfies, colored, and even signed some of their bandages.
Speaking Italian likely allowed for a level of personal communication between the children and the First Lady that might otherwise not have been possible. Trump is said to be fluent in four languages other than English and her native Slovenian.
Via ABC News:
“My visit to Bambino Gesu Children’s Hospital today was very moving,” the first lady said in a statement. “To spend time speaking to and coloring with children who have such a positive spirit despite illness was an amazing gift. The time I spent with the little ones in the Intensive Care Unit is something I will never forget, and I will pray for each of them daily. I want to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the hospital, who all do such beautiful and critical work.”
Trump also shared a moving story about a young boy who was just informed he received a heart transplant, adding that she visited with the boy just hours prior.
“Upon landing in Belgium, I learned a young boy and his family who had been waiting for a heart transplant was informed that the hospital has found a donor,” she said. “I read a book and held hands with this special little one just a few hours ago, and now my own heart is filled with joy over this news.”
Melania shared her experience with social media followers …

What happened after her visit was truly remarkable and heartwarming – One of the little boys she had visited hours earlier, received word that a donor for a much needed heart transplant had been found. Incredible!

Here is video of Melania with the children:
What a marked contrast to what the former First Lady, Michelle Obama, was doing in Italy.
Melania isn’t just content with visiting sick children once during the trip abroad with the President. She’s back at it again today, visiting with sick kids at Queen Fabiolo Children’s Hospital in Brussels, where she spent time doing arts and crafts with the young patients.
Thank u to Queen Fabiola University Hospital! Enjoyed creating paper flowers with amazing patients & getting a tour. #Brussels #Belgium pic.twitter.com/igeOaVSyf0
