When researchers in Iowa put a group of 8 random children in a room with a disabled handgun, the results were not what people expected. It took less than 30 seconds for children to find the gun and begin playing with it and begin pointing at each other.

“He’s shooting my daughter,” said one disturbed mother as she watched from a separate room. All but two children played with the gun.

What makes the two children different? Their parents are gun owners and have spent quality time teaching their children gun safety and responsibility.

Lieutenant Aaron McClelland said it was typical behavior “for young kids. Curiosity. Everything is a toy in their world. Unless we educate them and let them know sometimes it’s not.”

According to the NSSF:

During the last decade, the number of unintentional firearm-related fatalities involving children 14 years of age and under has decreased by 28 percent and by 74 percent over the last 20 years.

Unintentional firearm-related deaths are substantially lower than the number of accidental fatalities caused by other forms of injury.

Firearms are involved in less than 1.5 percent of accidental deaths among children 14 years of age and under and are among the least likely causes of unintentional death.

In the last decade, firearm-related deaths in the home have dropped by 33 percent, and by 50 percent in the last 20 years.

Firearms are involved in fewer than 1 percent (0.5 percent) of all unintentional fatalities in the United States.

It’s easy to tell which kids are raised around guns and the ones that are not. The kids that aren’t raised around guns, when they see guns, are drawn to them like a moth to a flame. Kids who have gun familiarity walk past a weapon on the table, and it has the same effect on them as the couch does.

Contrary to the media narrative, gun education safety saves lives.
