The singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson is accusing her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, who she split from in 2020 before embarking on a bitter divorce battle with him that spanned years, of previously telling her that she was not “sexy” enough to score a coaching spot on the NBC reality television show “The Voice.”
Clarkson Testifies About Ex-Husband’s Alleged Comments
The New York Post reported that it’s just been revealed that Clarkson, 41, made this claim while testifying last year before a California labor commissioner, who eventually ruled in the “Since U Been Gone” singer’s favor and ordered Blackstock, 47, to pay her $2.6 million for unlawfully procuring deals that should have been handled by her talent agents.
Court documents show that Clarkson testified that she’d been telling Blackstock for years that she wanted a spot on “The Voice,” but that he’d alleged to her in response that network executives were not interested because they were “looking for a more sex symbol type” like the singer Rihanna.
Clarkson went on to claim that Blackstock told her that NBC executives “had to have someone that was black. … They had to have a diverse thing,” and that she and singer Blake Shelton, who was a coach on “The Voice” at the time, “were too similar.”
When asked by her attorney how she remembered this exchange so well years after the fact, Clarkson replied, “Well, a wife doesn’t forget a time she gets told she’s not a sex symbol, so that stays.”

Clarkson’s Bitter Divorce
Clarkson eventually signed on to “The Voice” for the show’s 14th season in 2018. She filed for divorce from Blackstock in June of 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage, and they finally settled their bitter court battle over both their two young children, who are now ages 9 and 7, and the ranch that they owned in Montana in March of 2022.
“What I am dealing with is hard because it involves more than just my heart. It involves a lot of little hearts,” Clarkson said at the time of her split, according to US Weekly, adding that “divorce is never easy. We’re both from divorced families, so we know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts.”

Clarkson Blames ‘Ego’ For Her Staying In Marriage
While appearing on the “We Can Do Hard Things” podcast back in June of last year, Clarkson said that “ego” was one of the reasons that she stayed in her marriage as long as she did.
“I’m like, ‘I can do this. I can handle so much.’ My ego is like, ‘I can control my actions. I can control my reactions. I can do this and I can reach this person and I can get through,'” she said. “It becomes a little bit of your ego that gets in the way.”
Clarkson went on to say that she finds her new single relationship status to be “freeing.”
“Sometimes it’s nice just to be alone and just in your own world and experiencing your own bliss,” she said.
