After these accusations against Judge Brett Kavanaugh surfaced, former Vice President Joe Biden – a likely 2020 presidential candidate – suggested that women who accuse well-known, national figures should be presumed to be telling the truth. Then, Biden offered an apology to Anita Hill, who accused current Justice Clarence Thomas of sexual misconduct during his 1991 Senate confirmation hearing.
In a similar fashion, with a last-minute accusation, Hill accused Thomas of harassment and Biden chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee and presided over the hearings. Liberal activists weren’t happy with Biden because he allowed Republicans to question Hill’s integrity. As the liberal Huffington Post wrote, Biden was under fire for “allowing – and some said abetting – an all-white and all-male committee to badger Hill with probing and skeptical questions.”
Justice Thomas famously called the hearings a “high-tech lynching,” but Biden is sorry that he didn’t do more to derail the confirmation process.
Biden noted on Monday at the residence of the U.S. ambassador to Ireland that he thought Hill was “telling the truth at the beginning – I really did.”
Biden added, “For a woman to come forward in the glaring lights of focus, nationally, you’ve got to start off with the presumption that at least the essence of what she’s talking about is real, whether or not she forgets facts, whether or not it’s been made worse or better over time. “But nobody fails to understand that this is like jumping into a cauldron.”
So much for “innocent until proven guilty,” Joe!
A Biden spokesman clarified and noted that Biden wants to see a “fair and respectful hearing of (Christine Blasey Ford’s) allegations and that the committee should undertake a thorough and nonpartisan effort to get to the truth, wherever it leads.” And he, of course, called for the delay of Kavanaugh’s confirmation vote, which is the ultimate goal that Democrats have had all along.
Interestingly, Ford doesn’t sound willing to testify in private or public, until an FBI investigation can take place. In the meantime, another witness who was at the event where the alleged attack took place has denied the incident.
