Jeff Sessions Still Stands 100 Percent Behind Donald Trump

Jeff Sessions this week said he still supports President Donald Trump — even after, as one of the president’s earliest and most vocal supporters, he was forced to step down from his role as attorney general in November of 2018.

Sessions appeared on Tuesday night at a Republican fundraiser in Huntsville, Alabama, as The New York Post reported.

The fundraiser dinner for the Madison County Republican Party was attended by about 270 people, noted AL.com.

At the event, Sessions praised the president for “relentlessly and actually honoring the promises he made to the American people.”

The longtime former senator from Alabama was the first member of Congress to endorse Trump in the 2016 Republican presidential primary.

“Sessions — in a rare public speech — sounded more like the first member of Congress to endorse Trump in the 2016 Republican presidential primary than the eventual attorney general [whom] the president made a practice of belittling on Twitter throughout the nearly two years he led the Justice Department,” AL.com noted.

Sessions was confirmed by the Senate in February 2017 as attorney general — and stepped down from his Senate seat to take that job.

But when he recused himself from the extensive investigation into Russian meddling in the American election process, he angered the president for doing so.

“Trump relentlessly belittled Sessions during the nearly two years he led the Justice Department,” as The Post put it — and even referred to Session behind the scenes as “Mr. Magoo,” according to The Washington Post.

Sessions’ departure from the Justice Department in November 2018 was not unexpected; the president had signaled changes to his administration after the midterm elections.

Trump repeatedly lambasted Sessions over his recusal, saying he would not have installed Sessions as the country’s top law enforcement officer had he known his attorney general would recuse himself from the Russia probe.

In September, Trump said of his strained relationship with Sessions, “I don’t have an attorney general. It’s very sad,” as Fox News noted last fall.

Sessions on Tuesday said he was “proud” of the president’s policy agenda — and he attributed “much of [Trump’s] frustration” right now to his “inability to move the bureaucracy to achieve what he ought to have achieved fast enough.”

“As Kanye West says, he has dragon energy,” Sessions added, according to a video of his speech posted by the Montgomery Advertiser.

“I think that’s a good description of him, really.”

Sessions, who is 72, took no questions after his remarks — and he did not address the House Democrats’ current impeachment inquiry against Trump.
