Rumors and reports of sexual misconduct have dogged President Donald Trump from the early days of his campaign, and on NBC’s Today Show, reporter Pete Alexander thought it would be appropriate to ask Trump’s daughter Ivanka if she believed her father’s accusers.
“Do you believe your father’s accusers?” Alexander asked. Ivanka responded, “I think it’s a pretty inappropriate question to ask a daughter if she believes the accusers of her father when he’s affirmatively stated that there’s no truth to it. I don’t think that’s a question you would ask many other daughters. I believe my father, I know my father, so I think I have that right as a daughter, to believe my father.”

As you can see in the video, Alexander looked taken aback at Ivanka’s response. But Ivanka is right – he wouldn’t have asked that question of “other daughters.” For example, watch how Chelsea Clinton was cheered when she bluntly refused to answer a question about Monica Lewinsky during a campaign event for Hillary Clinton in 2008.
In 2008, everyone was well aware that Bill Clinton had indeed had sexual relations with Lewinsky. Furthermore, Clinton has been accused of far worse sins than Trump, and it has yet to be concretely proven that Trump ever cheated on Melania or any of his other wives. Does that mean his accusers shouldn’t be believed? Of course not. But the difference between Ivanka and Chelsea boils down to political affiliation, and, unfortunately for Ivanka, her father is a Republican – which means none of the special coddling that a Democrat daughter would get.
As a daughter, Ivanka absolutely has a right to believe her father. Good for her for pushing back on such a personal question.
