Earlier this month, a caravan of 1,200 prospective illegal immigrants began marching across Central America with the end goal of crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. We only even know about the story because a BuzzFeed reporter is joining the migrants on their journey, and issued a glowing report on their “struggle.”
According to BuzzFeed, about 80% of the migrants are from Honduras, with most claiming to be “fleeing poverty.” If the criteria for whether or not someone should be allowed into the U.S. is that they’re “fleeing poverty,” there are literally billions of people that would be eligible to immigrate here. Clearly, we cannot afford to let people into the country simply because of their economic situation. It should also be pointed out that the probability a poor country will eventually become rich diminishes when its citizens flee for other nations.
It’s a 2,000+ mile journey, and according to the Daily Mail, the remaining 130 migrants are finally approaching the border:
Migrants began arriving by bus on Tuesday at a shelter that was a five minute-walk from the border and within sight of a U.S. flag fluttering under an overpass linking the two countries. Minutes after disembarking, some sat outside the shelter with bowls of food, gazing over the road towards the United States.
Moving from town to town, the migrant caravan became a stumbling block for U.S.-Mexico relations after Trump unleashed a series of tweets in early April, pressuring Mexican authorities to stop them.
Four more busloads of about 200 Central Americans were expected to arrive in Tijuana Wednesday, but only the aforementioned 130 showed up.
President Donald Trump has encouraged Mexican authorities to deal with the caravan and has sent troops from the National Guard to protect the border. That could’ve had a deterrent effect.
According to the BuzzFeed article that broke the story of the migrant caravan, “Organizers like Rodrigo Abeja hope that the sheer size of the crowd will give immigration authorities and criminals pause before trying to stop them.” Trump clearly showed there would be no pause – but use every military and legal tool at his disposal.

While it’s great to see this attempted illegal migration of 1,200 largely thwarted, there are still 15 million illegal immigrants living in America. In terms of illegal border crossings, we see the equivalent of one of these migrant caravans crossing the border every couple of days. The time is long overdue: build the damn wall!
