Dozens of House Democrats are calling on President Biden to relinquish sole control over the country’s nuclear arsenal and the ability to launch a strike using those weapons.
Politico reports that the Democrats, led by Rep. Jimmy Panetta (CA) and Rep. Ted Lieu (CA), wrote a letter warning that “vesting one person” with the authority to initiate a nuclear war “entails real risks.”
“While any president would presumably consult with advisors before ordering a nuclear attack, there is no requirement to do so,” the letter explains.
“The military is obligated to carry out the order if they assess it is legal under the laws of war,” they add. “Under the current posture of U.S. nuclear forces, that attack would happen in minutes.”

Why Are Democrats Calling on Biden To Relinquish Sole Control of Nuclear Weapons?
Politico notes that the Democrats are attempting to curb the president’s power in the nuclear command-control system. But is it really about taking control from Biden or making sure former President Trump can’t ever have that authority again?
The letter wording is clearly a veiled shot at Trump.
“Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that caused other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment,” it reads.
The footnotes in the above image quite clearly reference an alleged “threat” to nuke North Korea by Trump, who has left open the option to run again in 2024.
Following the Capitol riot in early January, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi admitted she had spoken to the Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley about preventing Trump from accessing the nuclear codes.
Pelosi said she spoke with Milley about “available precautions for preventing an unstable president from initiating military hostilities or accessing the launch codes and ordering a nuclear strike.”
“The situation of this unhinged President could not be more dangerous, and we must do everything that we can to protect the American people from his unbalanced assault on our country and our democracy,” she added.

What About Biden’s Mental Stability?
Of course, there are others that see the story about Democrats trying to take away Biden’s sole control over the nation’s nuclear weapons and came to a different conclusion.

Former President Trump suggested that a push by Pelosi to review the 25th Amendment last October was never aimed at him but instead, toward Biden.
“Crazy Nancy Pelosi is looking at the 25th Amendment in order to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris,” he said.
“Joe is in no condition to be a candidate. We can say it nicely or we can say it badly,” he added. “The 25th Amendment that crazy Nancy’s playing around with — she’s gone crazy, she’s a nut job — but this 25th Amendment, I think they put it in so they can get Kamala in.”
Now they’re trying to take away his authority over nuclear weapons.
To be sure, the Democrats themselves have not stated anything about Biden’s mental stability. These are troubling and confusing times.
