Two shooters opened fire at a Denver-area school on Tuesday afternoon, killing one teenager and injuring others.
The shooting took place at the STEM School Highlands Ranch, which is eight miles away from the site of the Columbine High School shooting of 20 years ago.
One of the students who tackled a shooter and apparently disarmed him was Brendan Bialy — who plans to join the Marine Corps after he graduates from high school, his father confirmed to NBC News.
“Seems like he was already a Marine. Semper Fi,” wrote one social media poster after reading the news about Bialy.
“Thankful for his courage,” said another.
“We are deeply saddened for the victims, families, friends, and community on this tragic day,” the Bialy family said in a statement issued by lawyer Mark L. Bryant, as NBC News also reported.
The lawyer also shared this comment, as noted by Heavy.com: “When I spoke to him he was still in shock and primarily concerned with the victims and their families! He was very defiant at these senseless and horrendous actions. This young man, like many of our young youth, are compelled by their families, communities, and own internal convictions and strength to act immediately and selflessly. His message is strength to all!”

We have heard students tackled the shooters, and that Brendan Bialy was one of them. His dad told me he is not going to do an interview yet, but their attorney sent me this message. #9News #STEMShooting

“We’d like to commend the immediate response of law enforcement and assure all we are strong with the love of our families, community, friends, and every one sending concern, wishes, and strength. We will persevere,” the family also said.
Bialy, on social media, recently celebrated a friend’s decision to enlist in the Marines, writing, “Just want to call this guy out for making a commitment that nearly nobody makes. Can’t wait to grow with you, brother.”
Two suspects are now in police custody.
They’re described as an adult male and a juvenile male, NBC reported.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said it had identified one of the suspects as Devon Erickson, 18.

Also, the family of Kendrick Castillo, 18, confirmed to NBC News that he was the student killed during the shooting.
The incident occurred just under a week after two people were killed and four others injured in a shooting at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
One of the students killed in that shooting, Riley Howell, 21, challenged the shooter — which allowed police extra time to confront him.
The local police chief hailed Howell as a hero.
His family said they were “beyond proud” of his actions.
“While kids were running one way, our son turned and ran toward the shooter,” the family also said.

Thank You, Riley Howard, for taking the fight to the shooter and saving countless lives. #HERO
I am firm in my belief that Riley represents who we ARE as a nation.
Now it's time for us to show it. https://t.co/ljjwHjPICF
