Grand Jury Seated For NY Trump Investigation, Former Pres. Slams ‘Greatest Witch Hunt In American History’

Donald Trump slammed news reports that New York prosecutors have convened a special grand jury that could consider indictments, calling it a “continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in American history.”

The Associated Press reports that prosecutors are seeking to have the grand jury “consider evidence in a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s business dealings.”

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. has been conducting a two-year investigation, with this news showing he is moving into a more aggressive pursuit of the former President by possibly seeking charges.

The Washington Post, who originally revealed the grand jury news, notes they will be tasked with deciding “whether to indict former President Donald Trump” or other executives at the Trump Organization should they be presented with criminal charges.

The move suggests that “Vance thinks he has found evidence of a crime — if not by Trump, by someone potentially close to him or by his company,” the Post writes.

Grand Jury Convened For Possible Indictment Of Trump

Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor and columnist for Politico, told the Daily Mail that “it is fair to say that Vance’s investigation is far along and that charges are on the horizon.”

Rep. Bill Pascrell, a New Jersey Democrat, bragged on social media about Trump being ‘held accountable’ for his alleged crimes.

“NY has convened a grand jury to potentially indict Trump and his associates for years of documented financial crimes, abuses, and felonies,” he tweeted.

Added Pascrell, “I was the first member of Congress to demand Trump be prosecuted for his crimes.”

Trump Slams ‘Witch Hunt’

The former President lashed out at Vance, the investigation, and the report of the grand jury.

“This is a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in American history,” Trump said in a statement. “It began the day I came down the escalator in Trump Tower, and it’s never stopped.”

In his statement, Trump claims that Vance’s investigation involves “illegally leaked confidential information.”

Bloomberg News reported in January that Vance somehow managed to attain “some” of Trump’s tax returns from “other sources.”

Fortune Magazine at the time also noted that the Manhattan DA had tax returns and said the associated investigation “could result in criminal charges.”

Regardless of those “other sources,” the Supreme Court in February rejected the former President’s bid to prevent prosecutors from obtaining his financial documents, a ruling that would allow them to subpoena his tax and bank records.

“The new phenomenon of ‘headhunting’ prosecutors and AGs — who try to take down their political opponents using the law as a weapon — is a threat to the very foundation of our liberty,” Trump wrote at the time.

Trump is now calling the ongoing investigation a partisan attack by prosecutors.

“This is purely political, and an affront to the almost 75 million voters who supported me in the Presidential Election, and it’s being driven by highly partisan Democrat prosecutors,” he wrote.
