Gov. Kristi Noem: ‘Every Young Woman Deserves An Even Playing Field’ In Sports

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem recently spoke out against biological males competing in women’s athletics, introducing a new bill that would make sure “fairness” in girls’ sports remained alive and well in her state.

Noem signaled her intentions on Twitter.

Noem: ‘Every young woman deserves an equal playing field where she can achieve success’

“Every young woman deserves an equal playing field where she can achieve success,” Noem tweeted. “That’s why only girls should be competing in girls’ sports.”

“I’m introducing legislation to codify my EOs (executive orders) and extend further protections to women and girls,” she added.

Noem also released a statement about new language being included in legislation to defend fairness in girls’ sports.

“This is about fairness,” Noem said in the statement. “Every young woman deserves an equal playing field where she can achieve success, but common sense tells us that males have an unfair physical advantage over females in athletic competition.”

“It is for those reasons that only girls should be competing in girls’ sports,” Noem declared.

“Women have fought long and hard for equal athletic opportunities, and South Dakota will defend them, but we have to do it in a smart way,” she added.

The governor emphasized clearer definitions proposed to increase fairness for girls.

Noem noted that the legislation reads, “Only female athletes, based on their biological sex, shall participate in any team, sport, or athletic event designated as being for females, women, or girls,” which the legislation describes “biological sex” being “the sex listed on the student’s official birth certificate issued at or near the time of the athlete’s birth.”

Noem Promises Clearer Language

Noem’s move comes after a contentious spring, when she was lambasted by conservatives for vetoing a Republican bill that would have banned transgender individuals from competing in women’s sports.

The governor wanted to keep the state’s colleges out of the bill – leading some to criticize her for putting the NCAA ahead of South Dakota girls.

In this latest move, she signaled that she still wants to show deference to business interests.

“This legislation does not have the problematic provisions that were included in last year’s House Bill 1217,” Noem said.

She continued, “Those flawed provisions would have led to litigation for our state, as well as for the families of young South Dakota athletes – male and female alike.”
