On Tuesday, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie slammed Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s mask requirement, while a group of Republicans refused to abide by the rule.

Massie said her mandate had little scientific backing and refused to wear a mask on the House floor, tweeting, “We’ve had enough.”

Massie: ‘Her Rule Is Not Based On Science’

“We are refusing to wear our masks on the floor during this vote in spite of Pelosi’s threat to take $500 from each of us,” he added.

“Her rule is not based on science,” Massie continued. “All you need to know is the mask rule has only ever applied to members when they can be seen on TV!”

Along with about eight other GOP members on Tuesday, Massie reportedly refused to wear a mask on the House floor.

“I can’t hear you with your mask on,” Massie shouted at an unspecified Democrat who confronted the maskless Republicans, according to Politico’s Melania Zenona.

CDC Said Thursday That Mask Wearing Not Necessary For Those Fully Vaccinated

On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the White House declared that fully vaccinated people do not have to wear masks indoors or outdoors.

This prompted a group of over thirty House Republicans led by Republican Congressman Bob Gibbs to send a letter to Pelosi insisting that she lift her House mask mandate.

The letter read, “Speaker Pelosi, In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance released on May 13, 2021 we urge you to immediately return to normal voting procedures and end mandatory mask requirements in the House of Representatives.”

Pelosi Requires Mask Mandate

“The United States Congress must serve as a model to show the country we can resume normal life through vaccination,” the letter advised. “Let’s follow the science and get back to work.”

But Speaker Pelosi has shown no signs thus far that she has any interest in following the CDC guidelines.

“A spokesperson for Pelosi confirmed to Bloomberg that the mask mandate would remain because it’s not known how many lawmakers and their staff are vaccinated.”

Business Insider notes that the Senate does not have a mask mandate.
