Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser Laughs at Hijab Law in 1953

It’s often depressing to look back at photos of certain Middle Eastern countries before their governments became Islamized. It’s a reminder of how much economic and social potential was lost to Islamism. Even nations like Afghanistan and Iran practically looked westernized compared to how they look now under Sharia law.

Back in 1953 (the video incorrectly says 1958), Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser was speaking before an audience about a recent meeting he had with the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. Nasser proceeded to tell the audience of the ridiculous demand he was given. “I met the Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood and he sat with me and made his requests. What did he request?” Nasser begins “The first thing he asked was to make wearing the hijab mandatory in Egypt, and demand that every woman walking in the street wear the scarf. Every woman walking!”

That was met with laughter from the audience. One member of the audience can be heard shouting out, “let him wear it!”

Nasser ends with the joke that he told the Muslim Brotherhood to illustrate how insane their demand was.

Watch below:

A Muslim Brotherhood member attempted to assassinate Nasser in 1954, but failed.

It truly is depressing to see how things have changed, given that over 90% of women in Egypt today wear the hijab. If such a concept could be one that produced public mockery back then, the only thing stopping it from being laughable again is time.
