Former Football Great Rips NFL For Vowing To Play ‘Black National Anthem’ At Games

The NFL will reportedly play the ‘Black National Anthem’ prior to opening week games and will consider allowing players to put names of victims of police brutality on their helmets or jerseys, something that has raised the ire of former football great, Burgess Owens.

In continuing with their new role as social justice warriors, the league will have the song “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” either performed live or played on a recording before the actual National Anthem week 1.

“These moves are seen as part of the league’s collaborative work with its players to raise awareness of systemic racism and police brutality,” CBS Sports reports.

Because that’s the job of a FOOTBALL league, not you know, promoting and playing football games.

Threatened to Fine Players For 9/11 Tributes

How exactly is this going to work? Aside from the anthem, what exactly will be allowed on players’ jerseys? Will we have Mike Brown and “hands up, don’t shoot,” a completely false narrative about police brutality, plastered all over uniforms?

Not to mention, the NFL actually has a pretty embarrassing record when it comes to allowing players to pay tribute to certain causes on their uniforms.

Does anyone remember when they threatened to fine players for honoring the victims of 9/11?

The NFL has since relaxed its stance on fines when it comes to 9/11 tributes.

On the flip side of the current debate, however, they have not.

In 2016, what would have been a direct counter-argument to the supposed police brutality issue, the Dallas Cowboys were forbidden from wearing decals honoring fallen members from the Dallas Police Department.

The Cowboys had requested an opportunity to commemorate those who fell victim to the Dallas shooting in July of 2016, in which officers were specifically targeted.

Former Player Slams NFL

Owens, a former Super Bowl champion, slammed the NFL for its decision to play a ‘black national anthem,’ saying it amounted to support for segregation.

“There is no ‘black national anthem,'” he tweeted. “Why does it feel like the country is trying to segregate again sometimes?”

Owens, who is running for Congress in Utah’s 4th congressional district, had previously stated his intention to abandon the league altogether if players planned to kneel during the national anthem this season.

“If [NFL Commissioner Roger] Goodell allows Kaepernick to come back, if they allow players to kneel during the national anthem, I’m willing to not watch the game,” he told Sports Illustrated.

It’ll be interesting to see how many football fans feel the same way during the season.
