On Wednesday, the White House’s top doctor, Anthony Fauci, said that the definition of being ‘fully vaccinated’ will inevitably change.
The touchy subject has been speculated upon for some time, with some commentators believing that additional “boosts” beyond the originally promoted two shots would eventually be required in order to be considered ‘fully vaccinated.’
Fauci made his comments during an interview on CNN’s “At This Hour.’

After news that Pfizer’s booster vaccine, combined with its two original shots, seemed to protect against the omicron variant of COVID-19, Fauci joined CNN for a discussion.
Fauci called the Pfizer news “encouraging” and promoted the booster shot, which the Biden administration continues to push heavily.
When host Kate Bouldan asked if these developments meant the definition of “fully vaccinated” would change, Fauci seemed to agree that it would.
“My own personal opinion, Kate, is what you said is correct,” Fauci told Bolduan. “It’s going to be a matter of when, not if.”
Fauci said he doesn’t see the definition “changing tomorrow or next week” but said it could in the name of “optimal protection.”
“Certainly, when you want to talk about optimal protection, I don’t think anyone would argue that optimal protection is gonna be with a third shot,” Fauci said.
Fauci added, “Whether or not it officially gets changed in the definition, I think that’s gonna be considered literally on a daily basis. That’s always on the table.”
Fauci said he is overall less concerned about the definition than people getting the message to “get your third shot.”
“Forget about what the definition is,” Fauci said. “I just want to see people be optimally protected. That’s what I’m concerned about.”
“For me that’s unequivocally and unquestionably getting a third shot boost,” Fauci finished.
On Tuesday, Fauci told Agence France-Presse that omicron is “almost certainly … not more severe” than the Delta variant.
