Duchess Of Sussex’s Father Said She Didn’t Pay For Her College, ‘I Did And I Have The Receipts’

I don’t know what side to believe in this public spat between father and daughter.

Thomas Markle claims his daughter, Meghan, lied when she said she paid her own way through college. Thomas not only tried to defend himself publicly, he also said he has the receipts to prove it.

On Sunday, Thomas spoke to the Mail, a British online magazine, in response to the Duchess of Sussex three-minute speech to the University of the South Pacific (USP) students and staff in Suva, Fiji.

Duchess: “Everyone should be afforded the opportunity to receive the education they want, but more importantly the education they have the right to receive. When girls are given the right tools to succeed, they can create incredible futures, not only for themselves but for all of those around them.”

During her speech, she spoke about her time at Northwestern (this is the part that has her father very angry) and how it was “ONLY through scholarships, financial aid, and work-study programs — where her “earnings from a job on campus went directly towards [her] tuition” — that she was able to attend college.

That’s all well and good but Meghan’s father said that her statement about her college finances is “completely untrue,” and that he didn’t say anything sooner because she was pregnant.

‘I’m sorry but that is completely untrue. I paid every penny of her tuition and I have the bank statements to prove it.

‘I paid for her trips to Spain and England. I paid for her internship in Argentina.’

For his part, Mr Markle admits it was a ‘point of pride’ to pay off his daughter’s fees even after she became an independently wealthy woman. ‘I told Meg I would pay for her education and I did. It’s what any father would do.’

Is it wrong for a father to defend himself against a narrative that makes him look bad in the public’s eye? The optics couldn’t be worse for either right now.

Meghan’s fees for Northwestern were 200,000 dollars and she said financial aid helped her get through. Her dad says, no way, I paid and I have the receipts. This break in the family playing through the media is not what anyone would desire.

Meghan’s father hasn’t been privileged to see his grandson in almost a year. He says he doesn’t want anything from the Royal Family so why is he acting like this or why are they treating him like this?

Meghan must have a reason for no contacting him which he conveniently forgets to tell anyone, anyway it’s their business.

In defense of Thomas, it is extremely painful for a parent to endure an estrangement from a child who was once close. Your emotions vacillate between anger and extreme sadness. It is a loss that feels like a death. I don’t think Meghan will ever forgive her father for what she perceives to be a public betrayal at the most important time in her life, which was her marriage into the royal family and the start of her new career.

Her father made mistakes, but he was under extraordinary pressure with little support. This emptiness and loss must be something he will grieve for the rest of his life. I hope he can come to grips with this because I don’t think she will ever reach out to him again. Good luck.
