This was a huge victory for the Washington-based team, which has struggled to advance in the playoffs in recent years. With this win, the team will be bringing the Stanley Cup to the District for fans to enjoy.
President Trump, who is never one to be shy about sports, congratulated the team on Twitter:
Congratulations to the Washington Capitals on their GREAT play and winning the Stanley Cup Championship. Alex Ovechkin, the team captain, was spectacular – a true Superstar! D.C. is popping, in many ways. What a time!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 8, 2018
Popping indeed. One Capitals player has already suggested he won’t visit the White House for the championship celebration. (RELATED: Devante Smith-Pelly Won’t Visit White House If Capitals Win Stanley Cup).
Despite that brewing controversy, folks noticed something strange about Trump’s tweet: he singled out the Russian player, thus revealing his Russophile tendencies.
Take a look:
Weird, a Russian gets a major shoutout 😐

Of course @realdonaldtrump would congratulate Ovechkin, a Russian, as opposed to @TJOshie77 , who has represented the US in the Olympics. Another subtle confirmation of where @realdonaldtrump‘s loyalties lie. #motherrussia

Figured you’d congratulate the guy with the Russian sounding name.

Did Comrade #Putin tell you to congratulate another #Russian? He was great, but why single him out? #Russiagate
— Stuart Morrell (@orlandosgm) June 8, 2018
Figures you’d only congratulate the Russian

How ironic the first person you congratulate in this tweet is Russian. Congrats to the Capitals——-stay away from the WH if you can. You deserve better.
— Paul Burns (@TomahawkChop91) June 8, 2018
Only congratulate a Russian star. Makes sense. I hope he refuses your invite as well

These people are delusional. It’s not Trump’s fault the captain of the Capitals is a Russian. Is he supposed to avoid naming him because of an ongoing investigation that has lasted over two years and has yet to provide evidence of foreign collusion in the election?
The Russian speculation has gotten out of control. Robert Mueller needs to end his investigation now.
