It is kind of a hard thing to admit, but sometimes politics, like real life, is stranger than fiction.
Politicians are good at forcing us to conjure up things we have seen or heard that are fictitious – often, things we are glad are fictitious.
If you look closely, the modern incarnation of the Democrat Party is becoming dangerously close to a character we have all known and loved since childhood.
The steely yet persevering Wile E. Coyote.
The latest embodiment of said Mr. Coyote comes in the form of disgraced former Senator Al Franken (D-MN).
In an interview with Masslive.com on Monday, Franken was asked about any future he may have in politics. His response: “I’m keeping my options open, right now my focus is on doing this [tour] and doing other stuff that is more politically blatant.”
Franken is apparently returning to his comedy roots and going out on the road to do stand up shows beginning September 18.
Wait, what? Keeping your options open? No doubt Franken remembers what happened a totally different way.
Well, in fact, he does, but first, let’s review.
Franken was forced to resign his Senate seat in 2017 after at least eight women came forward to accuse him of sexual harassment and other unwanted sexual advances.
Franken denied all of the allegations, and of course he is innocent until proven guilty. But ultimately, over 30 of his Senate colleagues called for his resignation.
We have all heard that definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Wile E. Coyote is the embodiment that. He was always gonna pulverize the Road Runner with the next boulder. He always stuck with the same plan.
Democrats appear to be doing the same thing. We can go all the way back to Bill Clinton, and just work your way up through John Edwards, Anthony Weiner, Andrew Cuomo, certainly there are some who have been left off the list, but that is because the list is long.
And sometimes, enough people pile on so that they must step down from their positions of power and authority.
The third rung of the plan seems to be, just lay low for a while. Do some charity work, be seen carrying a Bible ala Bill Clinton, and a few years later, viola! It’s like the Servpro people have shown up. “It’s like it never even happened.”
Actually, you can go further than Bill Clinton. And sometimes, the order of the steps are different. Sometimes the steps are skipped completely.
After all, Teddy Kennedy was elected six more times after Chappaquiddick.
Wile E. Coyote was a victim of his own bad planning and never realizing that the Road Runner was going to outsmart him every time. Democrat men caught with their hands where they shouldn’t be like to make everyone think they are victims, too.
Bill Clinton blamed a 22-year old intern. At least Andrew Cuomo thought outside the box and went with the “I’m Italian, I touch everybody” defense. Anthony Weiner stated that of course, it was obvious that his computer was hacked.
During his Masslive.com interview, Franken also said, “Well, I wanted due process, but I had 36 colleagues and a majority leader who wouldn’t give it to me, so it was impossible. But you do have some regrets. It was a very weird, tough situation at that moment.”
Will Al Franken make another Senate run? It is hard to say. What is not hard to say is that the Wile E. Coyotes of the Democrat Party will continue to use the same game plan they always have. Get caught, play the victim, lay low, emerge cleansed. Or so they think.
At least politics, unlike real life, is never boring.
