The government shutdown is finally coming to an end as Senate Democrats pony up the votes for a spending bill to reopen the government.
After a drawn-out stalemate over the weekend, Democrats were finally willing to give in to McConnell’s demands, voting for a spending bill to fund the government for at least three weeks. McConnell has given them assurance that there will be a vote on a DACA-style bill to legalize the status of undocumented immigrants brought to America as minors.

Now the House of Representatives must pass the spending bill. It’s widely expected that Speaker of the House Paul Ryan will shepherd the bill through to approval.
This was an abject humiliation for the Democrats. This entire process has given them nothing in return. Many Senate Democrats vowed to stop any bill that didn’t provide legal protections for so-called “Dreamers.” They got nothing of the sort in the deal.

Liberals are furious at the Democrats over this surrender. They were willing to go to the mat to protect the Dreamers, but it looks like the American people disagreed with their tactics. I bet Democrats surrendered after receiving the results of a public opinion poll. They knew keeping the government shuttered for the sake of illegal immigration was bad optics. Now they’ve bent the knee to Trump.
