In January of this year, the Democratic party took control of the United States Senate, giving them the Washington trifecta – control of the House, the Senate, and the White House. Barely six months later, Democrats are preparing for what is likely to be a devastating mid-terms for them.
Don’t believe me? Well ask Democrats themselves.
This week, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY), the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, sounded the alarm bells in a closed door meeting of House Democrats.
During a closed-door lunch last week with some of his most vulnerable incumbents, House Democrats’ campaign chief delivered a blunt warning: If the midterms were held now, they would lose the majority.
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) followed that bleak forecast, which was confirmed by multiple people familiar with the conversation, with new polling that showed Democrats falling behind Republicans by a half-dozen points on a generic ballot in battleground districts.
It’s not just House Democrats who are unpopular – four new polls out this week show the job approval for President Biden has dropped precipitously – with Marist showing his approval down 10 points since April and Monmouth showing a 9 point drop since April.
Democrats see the hand-writing on the wall. They know that their agenda has been a disaster. They understand that it is incredibly unlikely that they will be able to maintain control of either the House or the Senate after the 2022 midterms.
Rather than pivot when it comes to their policy agenda, Democrats are instead choosing to double down on some of their most radical and unpopular positions. They know their window of opportunity is closing to make the kind of revolutionary change they want to make to the American economy and culture.
They had hoped that their window of opportunity would be a longer one, which is why they made HR 1 – to permanently change and nationalize election laws – their top legislative agenda.
Unfortunately for them, they have come up short in that push thanks to Republican efforts to fight back (for once) and unlikely heroes in the form of Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ).
The Democrats, however, have always had a backup plan if their efforts to permanently changes election laws to their benefit failed and we will see that backup plan in full display in 2022.
When, not if, Democrats lose control of the House and Senate in 2022, they will not say they lost, instead they have laid the ground work to tell “the big lie.” Rather than accept defeat in 2022 and admit their agenda was unpopular with voters, Democrats will instead claim that Republicans only won because they disenfranchised voters and that if the elections were truly free and fair they – the Democrats – would have won.
It’s a page directly out of the Stacey Abrams playbook. Abrams famously refused to concede her loss in the Georgia gubernatorial race of 2018, claiming the “process” was “not fair”:
“Concession means to say that the process was fair, but when I run an organization that in 10 days between election night and the night I refuse to concede we receive more than 50,000 phone calls for people who were denied the right to vote I am complicit if I say that that system is fair,” Abrams said.
The same corporate media that has spent 8 months vilifying anyone on the right who questioned anything that happened in the 2020 election will instantly pivot. The non-stop defense of the system will become an inquisition of the system the moment Democrats end up on the losing end.
Republican candidates for office up and down the ballot should force their Democratic opponents to go on the record – NOW.
Every single Democratic candidate for any office should be asked if they will agree to accept the results of the 2022 elections and pledge to concede should the final vote tally not go in their favor.
The time to hold them accountable is now.
Now is the time to support and share the sources you trust.
