Buttigieg and Klobuchar get the better of their opponents.

Democrats 2020

Democratic candidates for their party’s nomination went after each other in a Friday night debate at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Many attacks were launched and parried. Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Senator Amy Klobuchar dealt with them most successfully and won the night. Current polls have Buttigieg edging out Senator Bernie Sanders in the Tuesday primary.

Here is a candidate run down:

  • Pete Buttigieg- Like everyone, he stayed on message and did not get sucked into too many nasty internecine battles. He knows he’s ahead and he’s playing it safe.He hit Sanders on being too left wing to be elected, got hit from Sanders and Warren on big money donors, and got hit by Klobuchar on his youth. He hypocritically went after the president for targeting Hunter Biden, but ignored the numerous attacks on Trump’s family by Democrats.Buttigieg went hard left by saying he would not have taken out Soleimani, Biden joined in that, and was given coyly smiling glances by Biden all night. Perhaps Joe thinks he sees a younger version of himself. The other possibility is too gross to contemplate.
  • Amy Klobuchar- It’s not so much what she said it’s how she said it, as it is always is in politics. She’s in better shape than she was in the beginning of the campaign, or maybe just uses a better stylist, and is darkening her hair. She tried to come across as a moderate center left type who can work across the aisle. She succeeded, to a point. She hit Sanders on his far left ideology and insinuated, in a hit on his age, that Pete watches cartoons to the detriment of his political duties.
  • Tom Steyer- His best debate to date, he tried to get the Democrats to focus on the economy and the race against Trump. They wouldn’t and just mouthed their scripted talking points. Steyer seems to get where the campaign is going in the fall. However, as his business background is too moderate for most of them, not to mention most on that stage are clueless on the private sector, they ignored him. But he did well.

  • Senator Bernie Sanders- Bombastic and ready to come in second in New Hampshire. Ran away from his socialist label and only spoke from his script. Par for the course for Bernie.
  • Joe Biden- Old and distracted. He hit Sanders on his leftist extremism, but did it clumsily. If he doesn’t get better soon he’s done.
  •  Senator Elizabeth Warren- Shrill and drowning. Her sexist attacks on men and her vicious left wing blatherings are taking her into oblivion.
  • Andrew Yang- Not much there. Bemoaned that Ohio and Iowa went for Trump, but has no idea why they did.
