De Blasio’s ‘Cringe’ Stunt To Try To Get New Yorkers Vaccinated Is Roundly Mocked

De Blasio's 'Cringe' Stunt To Try To Get New Yorkers Vaccinated Is Roundly Mocked

On Thursday, New York City’s Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio tried his hand at PR to highlight a restaurant promotion that seeks to entice New Yorkers to to get coronavirus vaccinations.

The mayor’s attempt didn’t go over well – with the reactions to the stunt overwhelmingly critical.

Watch the promotion:

Burger And Fry Chompin’ de Blasio: ‘Mmmmmm … Vaccination’

Attempting to highlight an offer from burger franchise Shake Shack, in which those with proof they have been vaccinated can get a free burger and fries, the mayor kept eating French fries.

While still talking and holding up his fries, de Blasio said, “You’re saying I can get these delicious fries — wait a minute, but there’s also a burger element to this?”

Then he held up a burger high in the air and said, “I want you to look at this and think about — again some people like hamburgers, some don’t, I really want to respect all ways of life — if this is appealing to you, just think of this when you think of vaccination.”

After taking a bite, de Blasio said, “Mmmmmm … vaccination. I’m getting a very good feeling about vaccination right at this moment.”

The internet, of course, jumped all over this.

Social Media Comments Were Overwhelmingly Critical

“One of the most American things I’ve ever seen,” one commenter said.

“Play on emotions, entice the obese with unhealthy food, this is the ultimate cringe, WTF!” they added.

Some said the mayor had bad table manners.

One person tweeted, “Is that how he really eats fries? What the hell?”

One person was surprised he was eating a burger and fries with his hands like the rest of us do, instead of a knife and fork, like one might expect de Blasio to do.

The knife and fork comment was a reference to de Blasio’s faux pas eating New York-style thin crust pizza with the utensils, instead of his hands:

Overall, most commenters just thought the whole thing was strange.

“This is just straight up weird!” wrote one commenter.

When de Blasio retires from politics, he has a bright future ahead in commercial work for burger franchises.
