Parkland gun control activist David Hogg successfully lobbied the supermarket chain Publix to cease donations to Adam Putnam, a staunch NRA supporter that the firm had donated $670,000 to over three years. Hogg did end up shooting himself in the foot though, because Publix decided to hedge against having to deal with obnoxious student protesters ever again, and stopped all political donations.

As it turns out, “the supermarket giant has also donated more than $760,000 since 2008 to Democratic committees, including at least two dozen candidates for federal office at odds with the NRA.” All of their donations have dried up too. Among those Democrats Publix had donated to in the past include Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Dick Durbin, and Patty Murray, among others. The chain also donated to three Presidential campaigns – Barack Obama, Bernie Sanders, and Hillary Clinton.

Publix issued a statement saying that the company “did not intend to put our associates and the customers they serve in the middle of a political debate.”

They also completely ignored a key demand of Hogg; a $1 million donation to the “Parkland victims fund,” and signing an anti-NRA pledge. (RELATED: David Hogg Cashes In On Manufactured Celebrity With Book Deal).

That makes it more likely that Publix actions weren’t to appease liberals, they were to ensure that they wouldn’t have to deal with protests in the future (from either side of the political aisle).

According to the Washington Examiner:

Two weeks after the 18-year-old student activist called on Publix to atone for supporting a pro-National Rifle Association candidate by sending $1 million to the Parkland victims’ fund, the grocery chain has shown no indication that it plans to do so.

Publix spokeswoman Nicole Krauss confirmed that the company has not donated to the crowdfunding account, but highlighted the firm’s public-service activities at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, scene of the deadly Feb. 14 shooting.

“While we have not contributed to the GoFundMe account, on April 3, more than 65 Publix associates, including our CEO & President [Todd Jones], spent our Publix Serves Day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas,” said Ms. Krauss in an email.

Publix has profit margins of around 6%, meaning they’d need to sell nearly $20 million in groceries to generate the $1 million donation Hogg wants. Common sense tells me that isn’t ever going to happen.

Publix isn’t the villain that Hogg seems to think they are, and if he were to be intellectually consistent, he’d be staging “die-ins” at Disney, Allstate, or Universal Resorts, all of which have donated money to Adam Putnam.

Having recently graduated from high school, Hogg will be taking a gap year instead of joining college right away. Expect more pointless stunts like this.
