D.C. Mayor Bowser Wakes Up – Wants U.S. Attorney To Do His Job

Mayor Muriel Bowser is changing her tune. Sort of...

Mayor Bowser

The nation’s capitol can be a dangerous and disgusting place. In contrast to the well-protected and clean D.C. areas top echelon government workers reside in, much of Washington is a testament to the failure of policies that the federal government has followed since the 1960s.

Just a walk from Union Station to any number of offices and restaurants will take you through a gauntlet of aggressive panhandlers and mentally disturbed individuals constantly preying on tourists. Locals know better than to take that route.

D.C. Mayor Finally Wakes Up

With the recent riots the situation has become untenable, as the crime and filth are supplemented by arsonists and looters. Well, even the leftist mayor of D.C. has had enough of her own policies. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) has told the U.S. attorney that city police do their job and that “We need our prosecutors to do theirs.”

In a recent letter to Acting U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin, Bowser said “it is critical that when these violent offenders are taken into custody, their cases are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” She is specifically speaking of rioters.

Sherwin’s office, she said, “declined to prosecute 41 of the 42 rioting arrests made on August 13 and 14.” Since May 20, the police department has submitted 63 affidavits for arrest and search warrants related to protest violence but 28 warrants were declined and 24 are still pending. That is not an impressive performance by the feds.

“When violent criminals are not held accountable for setting fires, and destroying and vandalizing property, they are emboldened to escalate their criminal activity,” Bowser said, emphasizing assaults on police officers.

Sherwin’s Office Responds

Sherwin’s office responded:

“Since the protests began, this office has never turned down a single case for prosecution in which there was sufficient evidence to support probable cause… Specifically, with regard to the spike in protest-related violence throughout the District this summer, the Office aggressively charged 121 criminal cases from May 28, 2020 to August 1, 2020.

These cases included assault and battery on local police officers and federal agents, arson cases, and the destruction of both private and government property. Most recently, over this past weekend alone, the office brought criminal charges against five individuals linked to protest-related violence – two of those cases involved assaults on police officers.”

Bowser isn’t satisfied, saying, “The rioters damaged more property and injured more officers. I am told that prosecuting decisions in these cases are still pending. Given the stakes or demonstrations seeking to protest peacefully and our officers who are being assaulted while seeking to preserve the peace, I again urge you in the strongest possible terms to move forward with these cases.”

The irony here is delicious. Bowser has enthusiastically supported every loony Bolshevik cause and race-hustling policy in evidence in the national discussion.

Now the chickens have come home to roost as violent rioters have taken her at her own word and are seeking to destroy the system that Bowser runs. Bowser will continue to be caught in the middle because she doesn’t want to see her meal ticket burned to the ground but can’t politically oppose those who are doing it.
