President Biden on Saturday angrily insisted illegal immigrants who were separated at the border under the previous administration “deserve” payment for their troubles.
Biden was asked about compensation for families separated at the border at a press conference.
The angry tone in his response seems to suggest frustration with those who don’t understand why illegal immigrants have a right to taxpayer money from working American citizens.
“Now here’s the thing. If in fact because of the outrageous behavior of the last administration, you coming across the border, whether it was legal or illegal, and you lost your child,” Biden said.
He then switched to a more hostile tone, pointing a finger toward the camera and raising his voice.
“You lost your child. It’s gone. You deserve some kind of compensation, no matter what the circumstance,” he shouted. “What that will be, I have no idea.”

Compensation Game
The Wall Street Journal in late October was the first to report that the Biden administration was considering a payment of $450,000 each to illegal immigrants who were separated from their families at the border under President Trump.
The President’s insistence that they ‘deserve’ compensation is a remarkable turnaround considering he initially claimed reports on the payments were “garbage.”
“That’s not going to happen,” he said.

After Biden seemed to muddy the issue, the White House shifted their message to suggest he was actually only talking about the amount of the payments and not the idea of compensation itself.

Saving Taxpayers Money
The statement by Biden that individuals who knowingly broke the law ‘deserve’ compensation “whether it was legal or illegal, and you lost your child” doesn’t pass muster.
If a child is separated from a parent who robs the local convenience store, either out of security issues for the child or the parent went to prison, would that family then be owed taxpayer money?

The proposal by the White House to deliver settlement payments to illegal immigrant families if they become separated from their children at the border is at best highly controversial and at worst politically divisive.
Still, they argue that they’re actually saving the American taxpayers money by making these compensation payments.
“If it saves taxpayer dollars and puts the disastrous history of the previous administration’s use of zero tolerance and family separation behind us,” Jean said, “the president is perfectly comfortable with … settling with the individuals and families.”

The Journal reported that the potential payout to illegal immigrants is in response to those lawsuits filed by parents and children who claim the government subjected them to “lasting psychological trauma.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy declared the notion of paying those who broke the law to be “pure insanity.”
“It’s a slap in the face to our law-abiding citizens who wake up, go to work, and pay their taxes,” he said.
