Bernie Sanders Loses Restaurant Owner’s Vote for Being ‘Rude and Cranky’

John’s Grill in San Francisco has been in business for 111 years and is currently owned by John Konstin, who recently hosted Bernie Sanders. But after Konstin said Sanders was “rude and cranky” to his servers, the restauranteur says the Senator just lost his vote.

‘He Lost My Vote’

Konstin’s restaurant is famous for having politicians and many Democrats dined there while the Democratic National Committee held an event in town over the weekend. The owner said when Sanders and about 15 campaign staff arrived they were all polite–except for Bernie! Sanders didn’t shake hands with anyone and didn’t want to have his picture taken.

“It was all very nice, except for cranky Bernie,” Konstin told Politico. “I think he was just hungry and didn’t want to be a politician. He lost my vote.”

Bernie Should Have Ordered Room Service

The media contact for John’s Grill, Lee Housekeeper, told SFGATE.com that it’s very unusual for Konstin to criticize restaurant customers.

“Bernie had to be in a terrible mood,” Housekeeper said. “Anyone in the public eye needs to understand when it’s time to order room service.”

Unlike Sanders, Konstin described House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as “pure class.”

John’s Grill opened  in 1908 and was featured in the 1930 movie “The Maltese Falcon.” A longtime stop for politicians, the walls are adorned with political figures who have visited the restaurant over the years.  SFGate.com reported that thirteen Democratic presidential candidates visited John’s Grill over the weekend.

Sanders, along with Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren are the the Democrats leading the primary pack in most recent polls.

Sanders Needs to Take Cues From Warren

Contrast with Sanders’ reported behavior, when Warren and her staff dined at San Francisco’s Ayala restaurant in June, she apparently charmed everyone.

“She was absolutely wonderful and came into our kitchen,” Ayala General Manager Alexandra Loulias said. “So complimentary of our staff. She took individual photos with everyone.”

“Just the nicest lady,” Loulias added.

Sanders is always in danger of sounding like a cranky curmudgeon to begin with, so maybe he might want to think about shaking more hands and taking more pictures.

Because that’s part of campaigning. That’s what he signed up for the moment he decided to run again for president.

And if he doesn’t feel like it, Lee Housekeepr is right – time to order room service. In a tight primary among the frontrunners, he can’t afford anymore PR nightmares like this.
