Last month, we reported that 19-year-old Jayvon Hatchett had stabbed a white AutoZone worker at random after watching police shooting videos on the Internet. Now, it’s been revealed that Hatchett is believed to have beaten his white cellmate to death in jail.
White Inmate Found Dead
Muscogee County Jail inmate Eddie Nelson Jr., 39, was found dead in his jail cell early Saturday morning after being viciously beaten, according to WRBL-TV. After examining the body, assistant coroner Charles Newton concluded that Nelson died of “an apparent beating by another inmate” after discovering that he “had blunt force trauma around the head and neck.”
Nelson had been in jail for breaking rules of his probation and not registering as a sex offender. Sheriff Donna Tompkins said that while Hatchett is a suspect in the beating, she could not release any more details at this time.
Nelson’s mother told WLTZ-TV that she wants answers on why her son was placed in Hatchett’s cell in the first place, especially since it was known that the teenager had the urge to kill white people.
“I have a question for the Sheriff. Why?” the grieving mother questioned. “Why did you put my son and that other man in there together? Why? Can you answer me that? I lost a son because of ya’ll’s negligence.”

Nelson Family Lawyer Responds
Craig Jones, a lawyer representing the Nelson family, said that “if this mentally imbalanced individual had been a member of the Ku Klux Klan, they would not have put him in a cell with a black person.”
“If he was a rapist, they wouldn’t have put him in a cell with a woman,” he added. “If he had bombed a synagogue they, wouldn’t have put him in a cell with a Jewish person. If he had been that white kid up in Wisconsin that shot those demonstrators they would not have put him in a cell with demonstrators. I mean this is either sheer stupidity or meanness, that’s the only way I can explain it.”

This comes after Hatchett stabbed a 51-year-old white AutoZone worker in the neck and torso seven times on August 25. The victim, whose name was not released to the public, is expected to recover.
In court, Columbus Police Sgt. Ray Mills told a judge that Hatchett was smiling when police caught him, and that he immediately confessed to his crime.
“Mr. Hatchett told me that he had been watching Facebook videos of police shootings in other parts of the country and that he felt compelled to go stab a white male,” Mills testified.
