James Woods Defends Dolly Parton Over Anti-Trump Emmys Rant

Country legend Dolly Parton has been on the receiving end of harsh criticism from fans, after she appeared alongside Hollywood moonbats Lily Tomlin and “Hanoi Jane” Fonda during an anti-Trump screed at this past weekend’s Emmy Awards.

But it was conservative actor James Woods who rushed to her defense, saying the singer had been “sandbagged.”

Parton, Tomlin, and Fonda all gathered on stage for a mini-reunion of the film “9 to 5,” a 1980 effort that ranks as the 20th highest-grossing comedy film.

Fonda and Tomlin, rather than celebrate their past success, took the opportunity to trash Trump.

“Back in 1980 in that movie, we refused to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot,” Fonda said.

Tomlin replied, “And in 2017, we still refuse to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot.”

Fans were not pleased with Dolly for being a part of the criticism, and lashed out on social media …

But take a closer look. The expression on Parton’s face seems to indicate she wasn’t expecting those comments.

Woods concurs, saying he knows Parton pretty well and believes she was left out of the loop:

Parton didn’t wade into presidential politics very often during the last campaign. And when she did, she was pretty even-keeled about everything.

When asked about the candidates during an interview last August, Dolly wasn’t shy about calling both of them “nuts.”

“It’s the biggest reality show out there,” she told CNN. “So I don’t know where we’re going to land, but I think they’re both nuts.”

Would she have taken part in a skit that vitriolic had she known Tomlin and Fonda were going to unload on the President?

    I thought exactly the same thing James Woods said. Dolly’s face showed that the ‘ambush’ by those two two vicious, no class barracudas was not expected nor was she in agreement. Dolly is a very sweet lady with an abundance of real class. You notice she didn’t pipe up and say anything in agreement. She had that look on her face that you get when you take ‘grandma’ out and she just spouts off whatever is on her mind….you’re embarrassed, but you just try to minimize the damage by giving apologetic looks and getting out of there as fast as you can.

    If you take a good look at that appearance Dolly was in the middle of two loony tunes. Her facial expressions and her beautiful eyes say it all without even uttering one word. She was shocked and lam blasted on stage. I think she did right by not saying a word even if she agreed. That shows Class VS Classless.

    I didn’t watch the Emmys, nor do I ever watch any program that “actors” have, self aggrandizing and celebrating how well they personally think they performed their job. But, I saw a clip of this trio on the Fox News and thought at the time that Dolly was not a part of those two old ladies’ rant. And as far as Alec Baldwin is concerned, that foul tempered, foul mouthed, physical and verbal abuser, he needs to zip it. It wasn’t that long ago that his horrible antics were all over the news. And now he is puffing his chest out, and is critical of a man who has accomplished more in 5 minutes of his life, than Baldwin has done in his entire life. I feel sorry for Dolly…..she was duped.

    I don’t buy James Wood’s alibi for Parton at all. Guests who perform on major network awards shows know exactly what they are to do, study and approve the script and even rehearse the bit. Parton is too shrewd and a good business woman and knew exactly what was going on. She is a died in the wool liberal, always was and always will be. Their bit and the whole show was politically motivated to “get Trump” and even if you buy into Wood’s claim Parton could have deviated and ad libbed something pro Trump or even a neutral comment!

    Baloney! Dolly has had 5 days to clarify her position. A simple statement such as “Folks I simply do not agree with the statements (Slut) Lilly and (Hanoi Jane) Jane made at the Sunday night awards. Thank you for your understanding.” Sitting on the fence does appear that she condones their action and until I hear a statement such as this, I will assume she is OK with what the 2 libtards said.

    Dolly Parton didn’t say anything. Therefore, we cannot blame her for what went on. Can you imagine yourself being caught in the middle like THAT? There are many times when we should have spoken up in our own lives and then kick ourselves later for staying quiet. But if she supports our president and lets it be known to that crowd, she would be black listed and ridiculed by fellow show business people. She was in a no-win situation. She has done many wonderful things with her own money for wildfire victims in her state. Let’s not ostracize her because she has to stand up there with those two air heads.

    It is probably best for them all to be quiet now. Tomlin and Fonda are known for their outspoken remarks…personal beliefs. Parton as far as I have seen has always sidestepped negative issues and questions. She is a positive person and not giving to negatives any strength for use.

    Dolly was certainly part of the criticism and that’s her privilege and right. To try to defend her anti-Trump stance is totally wrong. If she was any kind of a supporter she would have spoken up. For someone else to come along and say she was “sandbagged” is just disingenuous. Keeping her mouth shut told me all I need to know about the true Dolly…..

      The facts are thus: she was merely standing on stage as told to do with her costars of a forgettable movie. She has no control over statements made by the others while she remained silent indicating her disagreement but she didn’t protest it. A clarification by her might have been useful but that would violate her policy of not getting involved in partisan politics. I think Dolly is trying to be nothing more than a singer/songwriter and an actress mow and then. An entertainer. Nothing more which leaves her fans to make up their minds on their own. I call that smart.

    Sorry but she was NOT sandbagged. She could have walked away when the Red Witch of Hanoi started spewing her BS, but she didnt. She just stood there and smiled.And when Tomlin started spewing the same BS, she laughed with her hand over her mouth. She could have called both of them out right then and there, she didnt. She could have made a statement to the press afterword condemning this, she didnt and has not. She knew full well and good what was coming as they practice this before the show even comes on TV, so she has no excuse. Say goodbye to your career Dolly and watch all the attractions that have your name on them slow to a crawl for attendance. And when you wonder what happened, just remember The Dixie Chicks-KD Lang-Sinade O’Conner. You brought this on yourself so enjoy the bed you made.

        I agree with Rich. She was sandbagged. Daniel, I don’t know where you are from, but I am from the midwest. She is from the South. There is a certain amount of decorum with which a woman carries herself, and if you will pay attention to what she did to try and do damage control, you will find that she sent a shout out to Dabney Coleman. She tried to turn it around by being positive and incorporate a “kudos” to someone in the midst of their vile rant against President Trump. And not only that, she sent a kudos to someone who portrayed the very character those two were coming against. She did her best to maintain grace in the moment. Someone commented that she should have made a statement condemning their activity. But you know what? Dolly Parton has proven herself to be a patriotic American. That in itself is enough of a statement. The only thing I would say, is that, knowing their political views, and knowing their feminist views, and knowing that the Emmy’s were going to be a Trump bashing event, did she have a clue that something might happen when she got on stage with Ms. Tomlin and Ms. Fonda. But I won’t hold that against her. Use discernment. She wasn’t a part of the castration festival. She was sandbagged.
