President Trump: Immigrants Must Wait Five Years Before Accessing Welfare

President Donald Trump made illegal immigration a central focus of his campaign, yet low-skilled immigrants also pose a cost to the livelihood of many Americans.

In fact, in many cases with low-skilled immigration, the illegal counterpart is often fiscally preferable, because there are more hurdles for illegal immigrants to clear if they want to receive public benefits. It’s generally the children of illegal immigrants (who are automatically U.S. citizens and eligible for benefits) who are the main direct cost of loose immigration standards.

If we’re not going to allow people into America illegally because they put a burden on our country, why accept when legal immigrants do the same? All that’s different is the words “legal” or “illegal,” when it’s a lack of skills (and thus increased likelihood of government dependency) that’s the problem.

To ensure that it’s only the best and brightest who come to America, President Donald Trump is also going to be building a wall around the American welfare state.

“Just this week, we announced a historic immigration bill to create a merit-based Green Card system that ends the abuse of our welfare system, stops chain migration, and protects our workers and our economy.”

“As an example, you cannot get welfare for five years when you come into our country. You cannot just come in like in past weeks, years, and decades, you come in immediately and start picking up welfare. For five years, you have to say you will not be asking or using our welfare systems.”

Trump’s immigration plan, known as the RAISE Act, emphasizes a few key points:

  • It would cut the number of low-skilled immigrants given ‘green cards’ in half.
  • It would implement a merit-based scoring system that values education and job skills.
  • It would require all immigrants to learn and speak English.

Well, it’s about time, isn’t it?

Immigration was never intended to be a system of charity, it’s always been a system to strengthen our own country, and we’re only as good as the immigrants we take in.
