Building a border wall is “moral” and is “not a bad thing” at all — despite what many Democrats would have Americans think, President Donald Trump said Monday night during an exclusive interview that aired on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”
The wall “has nothing to do with anything other than safety for the Americans, safety for our people, safety for our country,” Trump told Fox News host Laura Ingraham.
“And a wall is a very good thing — not a bad thing. It’s a moral thing, to put it in the opposite terms. And we have tremendous support,” Trump added.
Trump spoke with Ingraham just before taking the stage at his overflow rally in El Paso, Texas — a city just across the border from Ciudad Juárez in Mexico. It was the president’s first campaign-style rally of 2019.
And shortly before the president began the event, reports emerged that congressional lawmakers had reached a tentative “agreement in principle” to prevent the government from partially shutting down again this coming Friday.
The government partially closed on December 22 after Democrats refused to give Trump the necessary $5.7 billion in border wall security funding to protect the country.
After allowing the government to reopen on January 25 without wall funding, Trump warned he would not sign another deal unless it included the border security measures necessary for the country’s safety and protection.
But the new deal lawmakers reached only includes $1.3 billion for barriers along 55 miles of border in the Rio Grande Valley, according to reports.

Although Democrats also wanted to greatly reduce the number of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention beds, the compromise deal removed that drastic cap.
“And the Democrats came up with that because that means that you don’t detain people that are very dangerous. That means you have to put them out into our society because our laws are so bad,” Trump said.
“And if you look at what happened and what’s been passed over the years in Congress, it’s a shame. It’s a disgrace. That means we can’t just put them back into Mexico or where they came” from, Trump continued. “We have to put them back into our society. In some cases they’re stone-cold criminals. We can’t do that.”
When Ingraham asked him about the reported deal, Trump replied, “Well, I can tell you that a lot of things have changed and we’ll see what happens.”
“I can’t go into the exact deal. I just heard it very quickly coming over to see you. It was between the deal and you, and I had to choose you because I had no choice, right? And I’m very happy I did,” Trump added in a lighter moment, also noting the news broke just before his scheduled interview.
“We’ll see what happens,” the president added.
Building a border wall is essential to Americans’ safety and security, Trump told Ingraham.
“If you don’t have [walls], all of the technology, Laura, all of the drones that they’re flying around so nicely up in the air — they don’t mean a thing,” he warned.
The president also bashed the mainstream media for its unfair coverage of him. He also celebrated the new Rasmussen Reports daily presidential tracking poll showing that 52 percent of likely voters approve of his job performance — his highest number since 2017.
“I hit my all-time high today — 52 percent. And that’s with only bad stories because the press only gives me bad stories,” Trump said.
The president also ripped House Democrats, noting the new committee leaders are targeting him with a barrage of investigations after Democrats reclaimed the majority in January.
“Now they want to go back and investigate every company,” said Trump. “We have, I think, 79 different letters from different committees” seeking documents for various investigations.
“What’s happened to me should never be allowed to happen to another president with investigations on things that never took place. Like Russia, you know, the Russia collusion delusion, we call it. I call it a hoax,” Trump said.
“The Democrats know it’s a hoax. This is a political game,” Trump added. “So now the Russia thing is dead, and now they say, ‘Well we’re going to look at every company that Donald Trump was ever’ — they don’t have any information or anything. ‘We’re going to look at every company that Donald Trump was ever involved in,'” he finished.
As a successful businessman, “I did great” and “I made a lot of money,” Trump said. “Now they want to go back and investigate every company,” he said, adding, “We have, I think, 79 different letters from different committees” seeking documents for various investigations.
