Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, has announced how he intends to “drain the swamp” of corrupt politicians on both sides of the aisle in Congress – Term limits.

Trump said that should he win the election in November, he “will push for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress.”

Via the Guardian:

“This is our final shot folks. In four years it’s over. We’re never going to be able to win. It’s going to be a final party system. This is your final shot.”

Then Trump describes how he would “drain the swamp” in Washington. He proposes various regulations on lobbyists.

“If I’m elected president I will push for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress. They’ve been talking about that for years.”

This past summer, Trump said he would “look into [term limits] very strongly.”

With approval ratings at record lows for Congress (17% in the latest Gallup poll), and a survey in 2013 indicating that a vast majority of Americans from both sides of the political aisle support term limits, it would seem like a popular platform.

Getting a constitutional amendment to impose term limits however, would require two-thirds support from the very people you’re trying to term out.

The last time such an amendment was voted on was 1997, garnering more ‘yeas’ than ‘nays’ still falling well short of the required support.

In 1995, Trump surrogate and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich proposed a limit of 12 total years for congressional terms.
