Roger Stone, longtime confidant of President Trump and legendary Republican operative, believes the President should pardon Julian Assange, the founder of the information declassification database WikiLeaks.
Trump’s next pardon should be Julian Assange
Stone joined The Political Insider for an interview to discuss the recent claims by the Mueller probe that he colluded with Russia – and also talked about the Trump 2020 campaign, possible indictments of Trump-linked individuals, and the Russian collusion hoax.
The last time Stone joined us, he suggested that Robert Mueller may have his sights set on the President’s son, Donald Trump, Jr. (Related: EXCLUSIVE: Roger Stone Believes Robert Mueller Is About to Indict Donald Trump, Jr.) Stone still maintains that that may still be the case.
Stone is also in the crosshairs of the special counsel given his involvement in the Trump campaign. There have been plenty of news stories as of late about his connection to journalists Jerome Corsi and WikiLeaks. While discussing all of these potential legal dangers, I asked Stone what he thought of the President’s ability to pardon those convicted under the Mueller probe. Just yesterday, the President said he may still issue a pardon to Paul Manafort, his former campaign manager, who is currently serving a jail sentence related to the Mueller probe. Stone revealed that while he doesn’t have insight into Trump’s next potential pardon, Stone himself is advocating for a pardon of Assange for his role in shining a spotlight on corrupt Clinton dealings. Take a look:
Stone’s reasoning is simple: Liberals used to praise WikiLeaks as a force for transparency. In the past, when other media outlets divulged classified information on government wrongdoing, they were praised. Think the New York Times and the Pentagon Papers.
A Julian Assange pardon would blow up the Mueller probe
Stone believes Assange should be honored for being an independent voice who speaks truth to power. But, there’s an aspect to an Assange pardon that Stone did not mention.
If Trump pardons Assange, the jig is up for Mueller. That’s right: The Mueller probe ends. Period.
Pardoning Assange for any crime related to election hacking would automatically mean the Russian probe ends. Mueller’s entire basis for possible Trump-Russia collusion is WikiLeaks and the publication of stolen Democrat emails that were reportedly filched by the Russian government and then published in cahoots with Assange. That some Trump associates had knowledge of this and passed it along to Trump (a bold claim that has not yet been proven) is the whole reasoning for this ongoing farce.
By clearing Assange, Mueller would lose his only possible connection between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
Hence why pardoning Assange would send Mueller into immediate retirement. Brilliant, no?
We don’t yet know what Trump’s next move will be on the Mueller probe and possible indictments. But we do know that he’s going to go down fighting either way.
