President Trump Wants to Charge Stores that Accept Food Stamps

How often have you walked by a store to see a sign prominently displayed in their window reading “We Accept EBT,” as if it was a badge of honor?

In Obama’s America, seeing storefronts display such signs became common, as food stamp usage increased by 10.7 million individuals. It’s gotten so absurd that such a sign was spotted at an AutoZone store. Why? Who knows.

President Donald Trump wants to reduce those numbers substantially, already proposing a “work for welfare” system for the program, as the Department of Agriculture suspended the work requirement for food stamps during the past financial crisis. It’s been up to the states to individually reimpose their work requirements, and those states that did have quickly seen the number of able-bodied adults on food stamps tank faster than Jeb! Bush’s presidential campaign.

Now President Trump wants to penalize businesses that take pride in accepting food stamps.

The White House proposal to overhaul the U.S. food stamp program — and the deep cuts it would make has sparked public outrage on both sides of the aisle. But there’s another change tucked into the proposal that businesses say caught them off guard — and could wind up costing them more than $2 billion.

That provision is a new fee that the White House wants to charge retailers that accept food stamps, which is now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The Office of Management and Budget said the fee would be assessed when stores sign up and would require renewal after five years. The budget office said the amount would depend on the size and type of retailer, but the president’s budget estimates that the fee would generate $2.4 billion in revenue over the next decade.

An OMB official described the fee as “modest” and “reasonable,” emphasizing that some large retailers redeem a billion dollars or more in food stamp benefits each year.

Beyond the new fee, the Trump administration is proposing $191 billion in cuts over the next decade to the food stamp program. The U.S. budget office said the reductions would come from tightening the work requirement to qualify for the benefits, but said the details would be left up to individual states. The administration also expects states to make up some of the lost funding.

H/T CNBC

Is such a fee reasonable? I say why not? Every dollar in food stamps revenue that a business receives is nothing more than a taxpayer handout to that business.

Taxpayers deserve better – much better!

Do you agree with Trump’s move to charge a fee to stores that accept food stamps? Let us know in the comment section below!

  1. Oboob is the one that removed the 20 hr work requirement. It needs to be put back. Too many getting too much frees stuff. I do hope however that those that truly can’t work are not penalized. Be smart but we still need a heart and take care of our own.

  3. Interesting, but EBT cards are used for other benefits, such as SSI, TANF, etc.

Now, I will tell you this: If you can got into a Work Zone store and buy a pair of Men’s size 12 steel-toed half-calf work boot, take ’em home, cook ’em, and eat them both entirely, including the laces, I will pay for them and you can put your EBT card away.

  5. Everyone needs assistance during their lives. Temporary assistance and some government
requires NO hard work or education…just a sperm donor. When did it become “fashionable”
to be a ‘baby daddy’ ? What happened to REAL fathers that assist in raising their progeny ?
Why is it up to US to support these knocked up welfare recipients. If you get welfare benefits,
drug tests and DNA should be required. These ‘baby mommas’ exist for breeding, shouldn’t
be on the rolls, with the “freebie” pre-school care provided by US, run by aunties / cousins,
why not REQUIRE theses ladies to obtain a GED ? Why should WE have to perform for
    our families’ needs ?
    Nuff said.

  7. Fee’s can not hurt.
Food assurance is something I doubt if very many readers have ever worried about.
As a kid, i recall weeks where there was no food, except what remained of a bag of rice.
rice, no salt, no anything else, just rice. hard to take a cup of cold rice to school. hard to eat rice after 6 or 7 days.
No matter what we think about lazy parents or welfare moms, Kids must be fed. Schools are the obvious choice. breakfast, lunch, dinner and a bagged snack for the poorest of us.
SNAP should be restricted to fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, etc. time to refuse snap payments for premade food stuffs, hot dogs, lunch meat, fast food, chips, dips, soda, candy, cookies and so on.
What has happened to commodities? They kept me from starving as a kid in Alaska and Washington state. They too can be used to help prevent any anxiety over having food left after a week or 2 of binging on snacks, pudding cups and bbq’d ribs @ 29.00 a rack.
This entire system needs to be overhauled. When fresh is the word, and healthy is encouraged, perhaps, just perhaps we will stop seeing so many morbidly obese children of welfare families, particularly brown and black kids.
Just make sure they never go hungry, please.

  9. what the government should do is penalize supermarkets that refuse to run sales untill after the 10th of the month. if you go grocery shopping food is always more expensive the first 10 days of the month it is no coincidence that the first 10 days of the month are when food stamps are issued. being on foodstamps does not allow you to have a food reserve so people on foodstamps generally have to shop the first 10 days of the month, and end up paying a far higher price for groceries then those who shop after the 15th of the month!

  11. Yeah, the EBT advertising has really gone to far. I recently saw a bill board high above an LA freeway advertising EBT burgers by a well known burger franchise.

  13. Reform of the food stamp program is long overdue. For those that really need it, fine, it’s there to provide the needed safety net. For those that abuse it, it’s time to cull them from the herd!

  15. it will be passed on to the foodstamp people also, adding to the costs they already pay grocerie stores rarely have sales the first 10 days of the month when food stamps are issued leading to food stamp users being able to buy less for their dollar

  17. OK. The only problem I see with this “fee” is that it’ll end up being passed on to the regular (paying) consumers and not taken out of the stores’ profits.

  19. For able bodies that can work I find this a great idea. Especially the ones with 12 kids living off of their kids walking around with nice acrylic nails hair done up and fine clothes and expensive bags/purses. Those welfare queens need to go to work instead of spreading their legs and having so many kids by different fathers.

  21. Hrmm.. Let’s see.. maybe: II Thessalonians 3:11-12, NIV. “We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat.”
or maybe: Proverbs 26:13-16, TLB. “The lazy man won’t go out and work. ‘There might be a lion outside!’ he says. He sticks to his bed like a door to its hinges! He is too tired even to lift his food from his dish to his mouth! Yet in his own opinion he is smarter than seven wise men.”
or maybe: Proverbs 6:6-11, TLB. “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazy fellow. Learn from their ways and be wise! For though they have no king to make them work, yet they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. But you—all you do is sleep. When will you wake up? ‘Let me sleep a little longer!’ Sure, just a little more! And as you sleep, poverty creeps upon you like a robber and destroys you; want attacks you in full armor.”
I’m pretty sure there are more out there, but I’m not a bible scholar.

  22. Duane, really? You are so far out in left field you’ll never even see a fly ball! Bleeding hearts dripping with sarcasm and no facts. Sometimes people do need help, but it is NOT a career, nor is it a forever after relationship. If you are able bodied – get a job. Children are still fed in schools/libraries/centers up to the age of 18 and throughout the summers. Food is available. It is parents’ responsibility to feed their children – not ours, not the governments. Get a grip on reality, Duane. Of course, if you prefer you could stop receiving your food stamps benefits, freeing them up for others, or if, you’re employed, donate your salary to feeding them. I’m tired of feeding those who should get jobs and take care of themselves.

why me says Duane? You know how the saying goes you work you eat you don’t work you starve that’s how it goes Du- wane.

  26. Duane, Trump is trying to get “able-bodied” people off of the dole. I APPLAUD HIM!!! We need to return our societal aid programs to “a hand up” NOT “a hand out for generations.”
Duane, you should be thanking your King Obama for all of His grand achievements — NOT!!!

I didn’t live above my means and I took a second job to save money to buy a home …nothing has value unless you earn it, I’m sick of supporting people whose life is centered around expectations of someone else taking care of and supporting what they willingly created…more children….the entitled people make me nauseous

  32. That is what Repubs believe in. They have let all of the good paying jobs go overseas without trying to create more jobs in the states. Then they want to put the people in jail who sell drugs to try to make a little money for their families. Now, they want people to starve. There is a special place in hell for Republicans.

  35. We could always let people starve. Having millions of people walking around the country with nothing left to lose is probably great for society and will generate lots of new jobs. Jobs in law enforcement, corrections, prison building. Don’t forget EMS and those who clean up the mess after suicide bombings and such. For every billion we save feeding what is mostly children we can spend ten billion locking people up. ,

  36. Food stamps in America? The richest country in the world? Every food stamp recipient is a vote for socialism and drains motivation
from citizens. As a child I remember my parents working on farms to put food on the table…no food stamps no welfare, how strange we survived, I am now 90 years old and still no food stamps. food stamps and your vote..not a good trade.
