Trump Says He Could Shut Down Government Again if He Doesn’t Get Wall Funding

President Donald Trump told the Wall Street Journal Sunday that another government shutdown is “certainly an option” in three weeks if Democrats still won’t agree to a deal that funds a U.S.-Mexico border wall. The President also said he is highly doubtful Democrats will be willing to commit to such funding.

“I personally think it’s less than 50-50, but you have a lot of very good people on that board,” Trump said.

Trump signed a resolution Friday that temporarily ended the recent government shutdown, which was the longest in U.S. history.

The President said he probably wouldn’t accept a deal that does not include the $5.7 billion in border-wall funding that he is seeking.

When asked if he would accept a deal without the funding, Trump replied, “I doubt it. I have to do it right.”

Trump’s acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney has expressed similar sentiments.

There is also the issue of potentially getting wall funding in exchange for DACA.

“Trump also said he doubts he would accept a deal that traded the border wall funding in exchange for citizenship for a group of immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children, known as Dreamers,” The Hill reports:

A group of lawmakers from both sides of the aisle has been tasked with hammering out a deal that addresses the polarizing issues of immigration and border security. The group of 17 lawmakers is led by House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) and will meet for the first time this week.

“I’m going to remain optimistic,” Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the group, said on Sunday, according to the Journal. “If you look at the impetus from both sides, the shutdown was a miserable experience for everybody.”

“There’s a lot that tells me we may not get there, but there’s more that’s telling me we have the urge to demonstrate we can reach a consensus or we’re signaling to the American people there’s going to be two years of this [fighting] all of the time,” Capito said.

President Trump has said that if Democrats don’t agree to a deal that features border funding, he might consider pushing the issue by declaring a national emergency.

  1. Build the wall. Forget about DACA. All of us pay for our own kid’s college, How nuts is that, then pay for illegals. National emergency hands down. The sooner the better. How about that old hag Pelo trying to muzzle the President with his speech. She can’t do that for the next 6 years.

  2. I’m mad as hell . We probably need a wall BUT I figured out a long time ago if you don’t want a dog hanging your house DON’T FEED IT. Our politicians in Washington give more money to these wet backs , illegal aliens, un documented Democraps what ever you want to call them from my Social Security I paid in than I get and then tell us Social Security is going broke . If MY country can’t afford to take care of there own people that paid in how the hell can we be expected to support every mangey dog that sneaks across our border quit feeding the curs and they will go home .

  3. If I were Trump, I’d give the wall to Pelosi. Let her and the democrats, liberal media, and the deep state make it clear to the American people that they are only concerned over their power, not the welfare of the American people.

  4. President Trump says that he wants compromise. What is HE willing to compromise?

He went to North Korea and made a compromise with them, now they have an expanded base at Hoejung-ri and are busy building nuclear warheads. He is willing to compromise with communist dictators.

  5. Eighty (80%) of Government employee’s (of OURS) affected by the Democrat Shut-down do VERY little even when they’re on the job! If they were paid for only the time they spent in their office, they’d owe US money! Especially, considering all the freebee’s ( AND; #1 Insurance Coverage WE pay for), they enjoy! The top 20% does 100% of the work! While the Government was shut down, President Trump should have had ALL the Gov employees rated by their accomplishments, and those who were just taking up space, FIRE them! Lazy, shiftless, and should be replaced with people who earn it! No WORK, no PAY!

  6. Pelosi is trying to rule above her station…she is not president or even close. As speaker she has proven she can no longer be in that position. As far as the border, it does not take a rocket scientist to know that we need a wall, and we need it yesterday, even more illegals are heading our way. Do what you have to do President Trump to get that wall built.

  7. if he does another shutdown, it should not be the ordinary Joe that suffers. it should be directly aimed at the democratic party. shutting down what he did only made the dems laugh at him, they don’t care about these people. all Nancy cares about is getting drunk and having power they need the punishment not us. take away their paychecks for awhile. maybe that will get them off of their asses

  8. The stage is set for the final scene…while the President is negotiating with Kim of N. Korea, to save the world from nuke missiles aimed first at us, Pelosi will still want to tell Kim that he should ignore our President because he won’t be in office to sign any agreement as she won’t allow it! Impeachment is more important to her than life for her District’s voters, who may not care either.
Of course, President Trump will issue an Exec. Order that will require Pelosi and Schumer to trigger a loyal party Circuit Judge to sign an injunction and trigger an eventual S.C. trial in a year or two! I don’t think it will take that long for the two disloyal legislators to be removed to save the nation.

  9. “The President said he probably wouldn’t accept…” This isn’t the language we want from Mr. Trump. “Probably” is a squishy word. I’d rather hear him say, “Under no circumstances will I accept an agreement that doesn’t include funding for the ‘barrier’.” No weasel words!

  10. I think President Trump will need to follow through on his threat to close down the government once again, but at least government workers will have good heads up and hopefull cut way back on their spending to weather the financial storm ahead. I feel for the employees, but there is a greater cause. The cause of freedom and National security at stake.
