Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) is speaking out to The Daily Caller, saying that he believes the Democrats are “fearful” the infamous dossier on President Donald Trump is a “piece of fiction.” This is in response to claims by Democratic members that Gowdy and his fellow Republicans are trying to discredit the controversial dossier and the company that generated it, Fusion GPS.
Gowdy’s theory is that Democrats know how horrible and dishonest the report is, which undermines their entire effort to smear the president. Should the dossier be proven false, it would take the wind out of the investigation to prove the Trump campaign colluded with the government of Russia.
As Gowdy informed The Daily Caller, “I don’t know why anyone — from [California Rep.] Adam Schiff, to Vanity Fair, to Rachel Maddow — would not be curious whether or not the world’s premier law enforcement agency relied upon a dossier in connection with an investigation without vetting it.”
Gowdy added, “For the life of me I don’t understand why [Democrats] are focused on this unless they are fearful that the bureau did rely on a piece of fiction.”
Republicans have subpoenaed both FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, requiring them to gather information on how the dossier was used in the Russia investigation. The deadline has been extended to September 14th. Here’s more:
But Gowdy dismisses the Democrats’ complaint, telling TheDC, “I really don’t know what in the hell they’re talking about.”
Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, says that the FBI and DOJ have ignored “months and months of requests” for information about the dossier. The agencies have largely ignored similar requests made by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has also focused heavily on the dossier but has yet to issue subpoenas for the FBI and DOJ.
“The investigators on [the Intelligence Committee] have been trying for months to obtain documents about the dossier, but when you get no response, then you go from a polite request, to a firm request to a legal request,” says Gowdy.
“And if they still don’t comply with it, then we’re well within our rights — I’ve done it before — you bring in a witness and say ‘OK, you’re under oath, you need to explain to me why you don’t think you need to share this, what am I missing?’”
Gowdy is determined to know how the dossier was created in the first place, in addition to finding out exactly how much of a role it played in the current Russia collusion investigation. The Democrats’ arguments about Trump and Russia seem to become weaker by the day.
