Trey Gowdy Calls For ‘Independence’ of DOJ At Jeff Sessions Hearing

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was testifying before the House Judiciary Committee on his meetings with Russian officials and the Uranium One deal on Tuesday when Rep. Trey Gowdy hijacked the hearing to deliver an impassioned speech on the meaning of “justice.”

The Department of Justice, Gowdy pointed out, is an independent organization and should be treated as such. But unfortunately, he said, both the Obama Administration and the Trump Administration have used the DOJ as a political tool.

“Mr. Conyers asked you whether or not it was appropriate for the president to weigh in in on an ongoing investigation,” Gowdy said. “And of course, the answer to that is ‘no.’ It is not appropriate. It’s not appropriate in 2017. It wasn’t appropriate when President Obama did it in the IRS targeting scandal. It wasn’t appropriate when President Obama did it in the ongoing investigation into Hillary Clinton’s server. It is never appropriate for a president to tell a Department of Justice what outcome it would reach. I just wish my friends on the other side of the aisle would have the same kind of outrage when President Obama did it as they do now.”

Gowdy also asked Sessions how he would restore Americans’ trust in the DOJ “when it seems like different rules apply depending on who’s in power?”

Sessions responded: “We intend to do our work, according to the established principles of the Department of Justice. We will not be infected by politics or bias. We will only make decisions we believe are right and just. We’re not going to unlawfully use the department to advance a political agenda… I am determined that when the years go by, that people will not say this Department of Justice did not crumble.”

Rep. Gowdy is 100 percent correct. The DOJ is meant to be a neutral organization that holds up the law fair and square, no matter who they are investigating or prosecuting. Hopefully Sessions will stick to his word and do right by the American people to keep justice blind – particularly when it pertains to the federal government.

  1. Atty General Sessions was misquoted several times – from the video to the text. The worst misquote is ” I am determined that when the years go by, that people will not say this Department of Justice did not crumble.”

In the video, he said I am determined that when the years go by, that people will say this Department of Justice did not crumble.”

When the video is gone and the text remains, I don’t want AG Sessions misjudged!

  3. Hey Gowdy, how is the investigation into Trump’s botched military raid in Yemen that killed American SEAL William “Ryan” Owens and wounded three other SEALS going?

I guess you forgot about that. Amazing how that works.

  6. Gowdy is 100% wrong. There is a legal doctrine of the unitary executive. This idea that the Justice Department (or any other federal agency) is somehow independent of the President’s decision-making is a threat to that doctrine and is a bulwark of the Administrative State (or Deep State, if you prefer). It is the use of a mere tradition to trash a fundamental principle: in these United States, the people govern through their elected representatives. These appointees and hirelings are not independent of those persons. I have had it with this wrong-headed, muddle-brained nonsense.

Gowdy is biased. Sessions is biased too. He’s part of the sainted and sacred Prosecutorial Brotherhood, as is Mr. Sessions. They deeply believe that prosecutors are somehow God’s militants pursuing justice and good in all things. It is simply not true. Meet a prosecutor, watch him practice law, and you will find out.

I have been told on occasions that a misbehaving prosecutor is a “good guy.” I won’t get into the problem with that view: that being a “good guy” somehow magically excuses all sort of inappropriate behavior. I’ll just tell you my standard response: No, he’s not a good guy, he’s a prosecutor.

  7. Considering the case of Mueller and supervisee-side-kick, James Comey and their documented affiliation with the Clinton Foundation, the president should have relieved both Mueller and Comey ASAP upon entering the position of U.S. President. However, if Mueller, Comey and their puppetry withheld the pertinent information from the president, they should be immediately side-lined and investigated for malfeasance in office by whomever has authority to neutralize them. AND ASAP.

  9. Teddy what do you propose that would be more appropriate than what Gowdy was discussing here? What do you propose Sessions do? This isn’t a one way thing, its on both sides, it just seems the little minded minions can’t grasp the concept of honesty. Look at Maxine Waters if you want to see the shining glory of the demoncrap party. Look at good ole Hank Johnson for intelligence in the demoncrap party, he’s who feared that Guam would tip over if more military was there because after all, its an island. I sense your intelligence runs along the lines of good ole Hank. Wait did you feel the earth move? Don’t worry, its just Guam tipping a little to the left.
