Breaking news this morning as Ronny Jackson, the presidential doctor who has served three presidents, has withdrawn his nomination to head the Department of Veterans Affairs. Jackson, who has been under massive scrutiny in recent days, appears unwilling to go through a contentious approval process in the Senate.
Axios has the breaking report:
Ronny Jackson has withdrawn his nomination as President Trump’s nominee for VA Secretary, calling the allegations against him of alcohol abuse and overprescription of medication “false and fabricated.”
Why it matters: While Jackson’s withdrawal rids the White House of one looming headache, it resets Trump’s search for a new head of the executive branch’s second-largest department back to square one. However, it seems that President Trump wasn’t surprised by Jackson’s decision, telling Fox & Friends during an interview this morning: “I even told him a day or two ago. I saw where this was going.”

President Trump responded to Jackson’s withdrawal from the nomination on “Fox and Friends” this morning:

It’s a shame this happened. In recent days, Democrats have been smearing Jackson, calling him a pill-dispenser who helped exacerbate the ongoing opioid crisis in the country. These accusations have absolutely no substance behind them. Yet, Democrats have never had to contend with the fact that Jackson served then-President Barack Obama with nary a stink raised about his professional integrity.
Democrats have worked themselves into a corner the press never bothered to push them on. Now a good man has been traduced. It’s a damn shame.
