Robert Mueller’s days may soon be over.
Last summer, Trump drew a line in the sand in an interview with the New York Times when it came to the bounds of the Mueller probe that was looking into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
The President was asked, “if Mueller was looking at your finances and your family finances, unrelated to Russia — is that a red line?”
Here’s how Trump responded: “I would say yeah. I would say yes.”
Trump was asked again if his company’s finances were outside the realm of the investigation, to which he replied in the affirmative. When asked specifically if he’d fire Mueller over the Special Counsel digging into his business empire, Trump declined to comment further, though his statements were generally taken as an indication that he’d relieve Mueller of his job.
Now, we just got breaking news from Maggie Haberman of the Times who is reporting that Mueller has, indeed, subpoenaed Trump’s business records. An excerpt:
The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, has subpoenaed the Trump Organization to turn over documents, including some related to Russia, according to two people briefed on the matter. The order is the first known time that the special counsel demanded documents directly related to President Trump’s businesses, bringing the investigation closer to the president.
The breadth of the subpoena was not clear, nor was it clear why Mr. Mueller issued it instead of simply asking for the documents from the company, an umbrella organization that oversees Mr. Trump’s business ventures. In the subpoena, delivered in recent weeks, Mr. Mueller ordered the Trump Organization to hand over all documents related to Russia and other topics he is investigating, the people said.

The key phrase here is “other topics.” What other topics does it refer to? The way the story is written, it would seem like Mueller is fishing for documents unrelated to Russia, which is a clear red line violation in Trump’s vocabulary.

A perfect storm is brewing here. Consider: Just yesterday we published an account by a White House insider speculating that Attorney General Jeff Sessions may soon be fired from the Justice Department. Sessions, as everyone knows, recused himself from the Russia investigation, and cannot protect Trump from Mueller. Not only does Trump have significant proof that Mueller may have violated his own restriction on the ongoing probe, but also he has cover from the House Intelligence Committee clearing him of any suspicion of Russian collusion.
If Trump were to fire Mueller, now would be the perfect time. We’ll have to wait and see what his next move is.
