Republican Rep. and Florida gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis called for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to recuse himself and floated the idea of impeachment Thursday on “Fox & Friends.”
“I think it’s a continuation of Rod Rosenstein showing contempt for Congress and our constitutional oversight responsibility,” said DeSantis about Rosenstein’s refusal to share certain documents.
“We’ve been going for these documents for months and months and months,” he continued. “And what they do — they stonewall, stonewall, trickle some out. We say well, maybe we’ll hold you in contempt and they trickle some more out.”
DeSantis also criticized Rosenstein for his opposition to the memo from Republican Rep. Devin Nunes of California and said the American people have a right to certain information.
“If you remember the Nunes memo, people like Rod were saying we can’t do a Nunes memo because that will devastate American national security. It had nothing to do with that,” he said. “It informed the American people about some of the conduct of people in his department. So we have a right to this information.”
DeSantis said there needs to be consequences for this type of action, and that if Rosenstein fails to recuse himself, he should be impeached.
“Rosenstein really should be recused from this,” he added. “He appointed a special counsel to deal with Comey’s firing that he himself recommended. And then he signed one of the FISA warrants in 2017, that’s the subject of this. So he’s a part of this and I think certainly Jeff Sessions should not be recused from this part.”
“Let’s get the facts and let’s have some accountability.”
