Hillary Clinton received special treatment from the FBI during the Bureau’s investigation of her email practices, and congressional investigators have uncovered (more) proof of that fact.

According to a report from The Hill, the FBI had hard evidence to believe that Clinton and her staff broke federal laws by sending classified information through her private email server. However, the Bureau chose to ignore that evidence and edited it out in former FBI Director James Comey’s final statement.

Based on written testimonies, interviews, and available documents, congressional investigators determined that there was “evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of classified information.”

Investigators also analyzed the multiple drafts of Comey’s final statement. According the May 2, 2016 draft, “The sheer volume of information that was properly classified as Secret at the time it was discussed on email (that is, excluding the “up classified” emails) supports an inference that the participants were grossly negligent in their handling of that information.”

However, as we learned back in November, the FBI changed the final language from “grossly negligent” to “extremely careless,” and determined that, “although there is evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of classified information, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.”

Further, the FBI confirmed to congressional investigators that a key witness lied to the FBI during his interviews. That witness was the computer technician who deleted Clinton’s emails from her private server in her Chappaqua, N.Y., home in 2015 after a congressional subpoena had been issued for them. That technician was never charged for lying to the FBI – a federal felony.

But worst of all, Republican lawmakers confirmed evidence that the FBI had begun drafting Clinton’s exoneration before she was ever interviewed.

According to a senior law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity, “the leadership had a sense of where the evidence was likely headed and the idea was they would begin drafting their conclusions and if we found anything that changed that sense we’d alert them.”

This is just egregious. The rabbit hole just keeps getting deeper and deeper, and it’s chock full of evidence that Comey’s FBI broke the law in order to cover for Clinton. Meanwhile, members of Donald Trump’s administration are being crucified left and right for doing far less. It’s high time someone was held accountable – and that means going to jail.
