Poll: More Americans Want 2020 BLM Protests Investigated Than They Want January 6 Investigation

more americans blm protests investigated

A new Rasmussen poll shows that more Americans want the 2020 summer Black Lives Matter riots investigated than want an investigation into the January 6 Capitol riot.

Rasmussen reported on Wednesday, “A new national telephone and online survey by the National Police Association and Rasmussen Reports finds that 66% of Likely U.S. Voters think Congress should investigate last year’s violent protests, in which more than 2,000 police officers suffered injuries in the line of duty.”

Violent riots, arson, looting, and even murder occurred in major cities all over the country for months in 2020.

574 Protests In The Summer Of 2020 Turned Violent

So two-thirds of voters want the summer riots protested. But how many protests last summer turned violent?

Rasmussen noted, “According to a study of 68 cities by the Major Cities Chiefs Association, in the summer of 2020, there were at least 574 protests that involved acts of violence, including assaults on police officers, looting and arson.”

Think about it: If there is going to be an investigation of the January 6 riot at the Capitol, why would Congress not investigate 574 other riots?

Rasmussen also noted that there is actually more public support for investigating the BLM protests than January 6, with only 49 percent favoring an investigation into the latter.

In every racial group, a majority in want an investigation into the 2020 protests: “Sixty-seven percent (67%) of whites, 64% of black voters, 66% of Hispanics and 62% of other minorities think Congress should investigate the 2020 riots in U.S. cities,” Rasmussen noted.

Even a majority of Democrats want the summer riots investigated, with 60 percent favoring.

For Republicans? That number goes up to 75 percent.

For voters who don’t affiliate with either of the major parties, 63 percent of them want an investigation into the 2020 protests.

National Police Association Comments

The National Police Association issued a statement on the poll findings.

“When the mayors of cities in which violent riots took place in 2020 refused to let police immediately stop the crimes taking place, it sent a message to violent criminals across the nation that crimes will be allowed and criminals won’t be touched,” the statement read.

The statement added, “For the last year violent crimes have increased nationally and the lack of support from politicians has resulted in the number of police officers declining into a short staffing recruitment and retention crisis.”

USA Today reported in August of 2020 that the frequent rioting was costing the Black Lives Matter movement support.

CNN’s Don Lemon bemoaned the fact that the rioting is “showing up in the polling” and “showing up in focus groups.” He said the “rioting has to stop” because “it is the only thing right now that is sticking.

Lemon offered no evidence to back up his claim about polls and focus groups, but other reports support it. The Civiqs tracking poll is particularly interesting for understanding the dynamics at play. Net approval for the Black Lives Matter movement peaked back on June 3 and has fallen sharply since.”
