The horrific Valentines Day massacre at Majority Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland County sparked a gun control movement among the student body. Out of it emerged the “March for Our Lives,” a highly organized movement aided in large part by the media and some elected officials.
While there was an initial rise in support for gun control following the shooting, it’s since faded. (RELATED: Public Opinion on Guns Hasn’t Worsened Following Parkland). No meaningful Federal legislation passed whatsoever, though Florida Governor Rick Scott did sign legislation that raised the age to purchase a firearm to 21, introduced a three-day waiting period on all gun sales, and a ban on bump stocks. The same bill also increased funding for the training and arming of school staff. None of the semi-automatic weapons (particularly so-called “assault weapons”) that activists call to have banned were affected.
There was also a debate over having armed guards in schools following the Parkland shooting. There was an armed school resource officer at Parkland, who infamously cowered in fear as the massacre unfolded. Two would-be school shootings have since been prevented by armed guards on school grounds. (RELATED: The Left’s Narrative Blows Up As Armed Guard Stops School Shooter). On this debate, the county in which the Parkland shooting occurred has made up their mind, as the Broward County School Board voted unanimously to approve the hiring of armed guards for all of their district’s public schools.
The requirements for applicants include a valid concealed carry license, 132 hours of firearm safety training, two years of law enforcement experience, passing a psychological exam, and a high school diploma. Some of the funding for the bill will come from $400 million in school security funding that was approved in March, the month after the massacre.
While it was a pro-gun control movement that arose from the student body in Broward County, ironically it’s the NRA’s solution to the problem of school shootings that’s been implemented.
It will be interesting to see if the left attacks the Broward County School Board over its pro-gun policy, or if they will ignore this massive win for the Second Amendment. Given that the very district that the horrific Marjory Stoneman massacre took place in voted to allow armed school guards, don’t expect the liberal media to mention this story at all.
