Breaking news this afternoon!

The National Rifle Association, which has arguably faced more scrutiny now than any time in its history, will soon have a new president. And boy, is it a biggie.

Check it out:

This is incredible news! And NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre just weighed in on the announcement.

From CNN:

“Oliver North is, hands down, the absolute best choice to lead our NRA Board, to fully engage with our members, and to unflinchingly stand and fight for the great freedoms he has defended his entire life,” NRA executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre said in a statement on the pick.

NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch also celebrated the news over Twitter:

Oliver North was, of course, the central figure in the Iran-Contra Scandal, which occurred during the Reagan Administration. North, as a National Security Council staffer, arranged for an illegal arms sale to Iran in order for Lebanon to release American prisoners. North helped devise the part of the plan that used the funds from the sale to finance rebel groups in Nicaragua.

To this day, many conservatives still regard North as a hero and patriot who risked his career for the freedom of all. And though he was convicted of a number of felonies, the charges were eventually “vacated.”

Today, North is known as a Fox News personality who hosts special programs from time to time.

As the incoming NRA president, North will definitely be put back in the spotlight, especially during the ongoing gun-control debate we’re having in the wake of the Parkland school shooting massacre. But North has faced far worse than the tantrums of crying schoolchildren who hate the Second Amendment. He’ll make a fine NRA president.
