In a completely unsurprising and unoriginal move, former President Barack Obama called for “common-sense gun safety laws” in the wake of the school shooting in Florida.
Of course, he failed to expand upon or elaborate what exactly he meant by “common-sense gun safety laws.”
We are grieving with Parkland. But we are not powerless. Caring for our kids is our first job. And until we can honestly say that we’re doing enough to keep them safe from harm, including long overdue, common-sense gun safety laws that most Americans want, then we have to change.

Based on what we’ve learned so far about the shooter, Nikolas Cruz, the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School could have been prevented – but not by stricter gun laws. The FBI revealed that they were warned by YouTube vlogger Ben Bennight in September that Cruz had left a comment on a video proclaiming, “Im going to be a professional school shooter [sic].” However, after probing into the post and online databases, FBI investigators were “unable to further identify the person who actually made the comment.”
So the FBI can unearth a bunch of phony Russian intel on President Donald Trump, but they can’t locate an unhinged teenager?
As for Obama’s proposed “common-sense gun safety laws,” Cruz used an AR-15 that he purchased legally to commit his heinous act. Had the FBI been able to locate him after Bennight reported him, chances are he wouldn’t have passed the background check, and maybe this wouldn’t have happened.
Then again, Cruz seemed intent on doing harm, specifically by committing a school shooting. Had he been legally denied the AR-15, he undoubtedly would have just gone through criminal avenues to obtain one.
Stricter gun control laws will not stop a person who is intent on killing. Instead, they will only make it harder for Americans who want to legally arm themselves in effort to protect themselves and others from life-threatening situations.
