NPR Says Democrats Believe Trump’s ‘Base is Too Dumb’ To Get Behind Impeachment

On Wednesday, National Public Radio had a discussion about whether President Donald Trump’s supporters were too loyal or “dumb” to get behind his impeachment.

‘Base is Too Dumb’

Joshua Johnson, the host of the NPR program “1A,” discussed the White House’s  decision to release the transcript of the phone call that took place in July between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The administration apparently felt it necessary to release this information after Democrats’ announced Tuesday they would push for an impeachment inquiry against Trump. Johnson’s guests were journalist Edward Luce of Financial Times along with Southern Methodist University presidential historian Jeff Engel.

Johnson asked at one point during the discussion whether there was merit to Democrats’ suspicion that Trump supporters simply would not care about any potential wrongdoing on the President’s part, even with evidence.

“I don’t think that it is inaccurate to say that some Democrats would rather focus on 2020 because they believe that the president’s base is unshakeable, that they will support him no matter what, and that whatever comes out of this impeachment inquiry, that they are solidly set on re-electing Donald Trump,” Johnson said.

He continued (emphasis added), “I also don’t think that hyperbole would be overstating it to say that some Democrats just think that the president’s base is too dumb to know the difference, that they wouldn’t get — even if all of the evidence pointed toward impeachment, pointed toward this being someone who needed to be removed, that the president has fooled enough people, that they are so gullible, that they will not vote against him no matter what.”

“That’s the vibe I get from some Democrats,” Johnson continued, “that this whole thing is a waste of time, because ‘those people’ are going to pick him no matter what.

‘There’s a pretty good case to be made for that argument…’

Luce replied to Johnson, “There’s a pretty good case to be made for that argument … There is a bedrock of support that, as Trump said, he could shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue, they’d still vote for him. Whether that means they’re gullible or not, I don’t know.”

Why Would Trump Supporters Automatically Believe ‘Fake News?’

Engel said that Trump’s supporters might not believe any alleged evidence because they simply don’t trust the mainstream media, which the President himself dismisses as “fake news.”

“We are living in a much different truth environment” Engel noted, when comparing the potentiality of Trump resigning to the last president to do that, Richard M. Nixon.

Conservatives have always known that the liberal elite doesn’t have much respect for Republican voters. At least NPR was honest enough to say it outright.
