When FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced late last year that the so-called “net neutrality” regulations imposed during the Obama administration would be repealed, the Chicken Little Brigade came out in full force. Just take a look at some of the most hysterical headlines prior to repeal:
- “The FCC has created an internet for the elite.” – CNN
- “This is the end of the internet as we know it.” – Sen. Bernie Sanders
- “Ending net neutrality will destroy everything that makes the internet great.” – NBC News
- “How the FCC’s killing of net neutrality will ruin the internet forever” – GQ
So, what’s happened since? Has the sky come crashing down? Have internet speeds been throttled? Are internet service providers treating certain kinds of internet traffic differently? Net neutrality didn’t take effect until 2015 and was repealed in June 2018, meaning nearly the entire history of the internet existed without net neutrality. The sky wasn’t falling then, and it certainly isn’t now.
In fact, just the opposite. Chairman Pai was of the belief that deregulation of the internet would increase competition, and thus improve quality. When the repeal of net neutrality was announced, the U.S. had the 12th fastest internet speeds in the worst. Since the announcement of net neutrality’s repeal, the U.S. improved to the 6th fastest internet speed in the world.

So hysterical were some liberals over the prospect of a net neutrality repeal, that a bomb threat was called into a net neutrality hearing in December of last year in an attempt to thwart progress on the repeal. That didn’t work, and ironically, the person who called in the bomb threat should be grateful for that.
None of the alleged consequences we were told would wreak havoc on the internet in absence of net neutrality rules ever materialized. While we were warned that service providers would throttle people’s internet speeds to force them to pay more for faster speeds, that never materialized (rather, the opposite did). Of course, this shouldn’t be much of a surprise, given that none of those potential problems existed before net neutrality existed.
The continued build out of the internet has nothing to do with net neutrality. The internet will continue to get faster but for some it will also get more expensive. We already have data caps and reduced data speeds after as certain data point with 4G. When 5G comes along offering much faster speeds you will hit your caps even faster. 5G will do nothing to improve the internet speeds over long distances. 5G will require a tremendous investment by wireless companies and they need to make that money back somehow. And were to do you think that money will come from, they same place as it does now, their customers.
Even cable internet providers have have fees for exceeding data limits. And they love to tell you how only heavy users would hit these limits but they don’t mention that you computer is constantly chatting with other computers on the internet even when you are not streaming a movie. So you might hit that limit much faster than expected once you add new hardware devices to your home like camera door bells.
It must be a vast Right-wing conspiracy…

Bush cancelled the last 6 months of Clinton’s directives, Obama cancelled 1 year of Bush’s . Obama’s need to be cancelled as well.
