The Associated Student Body at California High School in San Ramon has elected to ban the National Anthem from being played at any school rallies because it is “racially offensive.”
Odd, since such actions are deemed by me to be intellectually offensive. In other words, this is dumb.
“It was brought to our attention that the national anthem’s third verse is outdated and racially offensive,” wrote the president of the school’s Associated Study Body. “We had nothing but good intentions by removing the song so that we could be fully inclusive to our student body.”
Taxpayers in the San Ramon schools district – demand your money back. It is NOT being spent wisely.

The problem with the Anthem, according to these future Democrats, lies in the third verse, which is never played at any rally, and which few Americans even know exists. That verse references the “the hireling and slave.”
Use of the word ‘slave’ isn’t as straightforward as the perpetually offended would like you to believe.
Mark Clague, professor of music history and African and AfroAmerican studies at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), believes the National Anthem doesn’t glorify slavery or racism, but it is a product of its time.
In regards to that particular lyric in the third verse, Clague argues Francis Scott Key “honored American soldiers both black and white.”
But hey, far be it for us to suggest high school students go and do their homework before making an ignorant decision.
Fox News opinion columnist Todd Starnes asks the question: “Where are the grownups in charge of this public school?”
We’d like to know the same thing.

The problem is, the grownups are encouraging the students.
“The students made their decision after learning that the third verse is seen as offensive to some groups,” a director of communications at the school district told the San Francisco Chronicle. “The ASB is committed to creating a school culture that is welcoming to all students.”
Most of the blame belongs on educators who, rather than teaching students why some of their noble intentions are misguided and ill-informed, allow and encourage this kind of stupidity to thrive in schools today.
By contrast, a senior at the school joined Starnes on his radio program warning, “There’s been a lot of pushback on the removal of the Anthem – and not just from conservatives.”
“It’s important that we honor and respect those who sacrificed their lives protecting the freedom that us Americans take for granted every day,” he insisted.
