Flashback: Nancy Pelosi Voted To Recognize Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel in 1995

WASHINGTON, DC - NOVEMBER 30: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) holds her weekly news conference in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center November 30, 2017 in Washington, DC. Pelosi said that she believes that former House Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) should resign from the House after several women said that he sexually harrased them. President Donald Trump ruffled a lot of liberal feathers on Wednesday when he declared that the United States would officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and initiated the process to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to the city. Liberals were so mad about it that they tried to impeach Trump. Of course, they failed spectacularly.

But Rep. Al Green’s impeachment attempt wasn’t even the most eyebrow-raising response to Trump’s announcement. On Wednesday, House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi proclaimed that, “In the absence of a negotiated settlement between Israel and the Palestinians, moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem now may needlessly spark mass protests, fuel tensions, and make it more difficult to reach a durable peace.”

However, in October 1995, Pelosi voted in favor of the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995, which required the move of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem without precondition of a negotiated settlement. “Jerusalem should remain an undivided city in which the rights of every ethnic and religious group are protected;” the act read, “Jerusalem should be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel; and the United States Embassy in Israel should be established in Jerusalem no later than May 31, 1999.”

Wednesday was far from the first time Pelosi proved to be a hypocrite on Israel, though. In January 2017, she was one of 80 lawmakers who opposed a House of Representatives statement of opposition to a UN resolution that condemned Israel for expanding its settlements. Then at the AIPAC conference in March, she urged both Republicans and Democrats to avoid “unilateral actions by either of the two parties that would push the prospects for peace further out of reach.”

In other words, to liberals “peace” means “denying Israel at every turn.”

It’s truly amazing how upset Democrats are about Trump’s decision to relocate the embassy. Have they forgotten how, at AIPAC in 2008, Barack Obama promised to do the exact same thing?

Trump is simply making good on campaign promises that others forgot. Maybe that’s what has liberals so upset: that Trump has the guts to do what Obama never could.
